How many pups in litter??? Hello Everyone! I have a question about my soon-to-be-pregant baby. I would love for everyone to answer so I can have a good idea of what to expect. HOW MANY PUPPIES USUALLY COME IN A LITTER? Thanks in advance! |
I'm not sure if this is totally accurate or not, but I heard Yorkies usually have 3-4 puppies in a litter.. It also depends on the size of the mother. When my sister's yorkie had babies, she had 3 in her litter. The mother was 10lb yorkie then... Hope this's somewhat helpful... :) |
It totally depends on the size of the parents. Both my dogs came from litters of 3 and the mom's were about 4.5 lbs. However I have read somewhere of a Yorkie having 9 in a litter! Only 6 survived though. :( |

They were all sold about a month ago, and on their private website they've written that as far as they've heard, there hasn't been a yorkie with this many puppies who have all survived in the last 30 years or so. Thanks! Our lil one, LOLA, is right at 6lbs. The male she mated w/ was only 5lbs. I have heard from other emails as well, that sometimes th 1st time around she'll only have about 2 puppies. But the rest of the responses have all been about the same: 3-4 puppies. I want to thank you all very much for your input. We just sent our LOLA, to try to get her pregnant, for a week & just her back yesterday. We're so happy she's home & we can tell she is too. Now we wait a few weeks to see if we see any signs of pregnancy. And of course we'll take her to the Vet for a professional opinion. Can't wait! Thanks again! |
the dog that I am getting my puppy from had 7 and it was her first time as well. Congrats!! keep us posted on how she is doing. |
size I have had from one to seven in litters, with the average over 30 yrs to be 3 to 4 per litter. Mothers size never had much to so with it. |

Something tells me you need to look on internet about breeding. I've had from 2 to 4 in litter the first two one was born dead. I'd fine a good vet and do some reading and searching if i was you. Dog could need c-section if she gets in trouble. |
I have heard that if your female yorkie came from a large litter, you can expect her to have a large litter. My yorkie came from a litter of 8 and it was the mother's first litter. The mother's mother also came from a litter of 8. Could be coincidence of course. All of the puppies survived, however the mother was almost "nursed to death" and the babies were hand fed from day five on. |
Bailey was 1 of 8! All lived. But the dam got Eclampsia and the pups had to be bottle fed.... I think the average is 2-3 pups |
Can you rely on palpation? I switched Vets when my Yorkie was about 21 days pregnant (from first day of tying). This Vet said she felt one fetus.......does anyone have any experience with palpation and accuracy? I'm new at breeding and think maybe I should have her x-rayed so that I know how many pups and what position (and condition) they are in. What if the Vet. is accurate and she has a very large puppy? She is around day 47 and looks large! Does anyone have palpation stories? This is my bitch's first litter, she is 2 years old and about 8lbs (normally). She was bred with my sisters Pom (slightly smaller than my yorkie). My vet said she wouldn't bother doing an x-ray. Please let me know what you think. |

Im new to this as well. My yorkie is pregnant as well (46 days now). She isn't huge but she has a tummy on her. She has an appointment money (day 50) to get an x-ray and exam. Im anxious to know how many puppies are in there, but im nervous about the delivery. I've never done this before and it was an accidental pregnancy. Im trying to read any and all info I can find that may help me. Unfortunately, I haven't found one breeder anywhere near where I live who can help me. So, I guess it's just me and the vet (I switched vets due to relocation and this is the first time I will be meeting her). I wish you luck and hope all goes well!! |
new moms to be Palpatating is only as good as the person doing it..like a person who reads xrays..lots of room for error. Do an xray at the 8th week..especially if there is only one. Xrays too early are not accurate either, I wait until at least 55 to 60 days. Good luck |
