pet quality yorkies People I have talked to who don't know much about yorkies, think they all look like the show quality dogs. Is there a website that has pet quality yorkies that have all the differences that yorkies can have? I could print it out and keep it in my wallet. My cousin has a yellow lab and says for the most part they all look alike. I couldn't get through to her. Thanks |
I've always been under the impression that 'pet quality' dogs - any breed - are just dogs that don't fit the breed standard to a T. Too big, too small, not the right color(s), underbite, overbite, ect. |

I agree. I see all kinds of yorkies that don't look like my little guy and wonder. I'd be interested in seeing such a site. The main difference I notice is yorkies with a 'longer' nose. I know the shorter nose is desirable in the U.S. show circuit. |
1 Attachment(s) Pet quality can be a very simple flaw that's hardly noticable to the untrained eye or it can be a major fault. Here's a link that has some info on pet quality http://www.canismajor.com/dog/petqual.html and here's a picture of Mia, she is pet quality. I think she is still a beautiful dog and I find her faults cute! |
Mia is a very beautiful yorkie. They all are, but she looks like a little princess. My Cricket looks and acts like a little princess, and is very prissy, her big brother Bubba is just that, a big Bubba! They are so different. If you call her she will come to you like she's doing you a favor. When you call Bubba, he runs at full speed and can't wait to give you kisses. Variety is the spice of life, and is wonderful in yorkies!! |
how old are your little ones? They are so cute! I have to say I really love Bubba's name as I'm a Forrest Gump fan..love your siggy :-) "Forrest Gump: Bubba was my best good friend" what a perfect name for a for little dog. Very cute! |

I watched Forrest Gump 3 nights ago. It's my favorite movie. |
they are cute! are they litter mates? |
Yes they are. We got Cricket at 8 weeks. We wanted both, but the $$$$. I called 3 weeks later to let the breeder know how wonderful she was and that I was sending pics. I asked if they still had her brother, I KNEW they must have sold him by now, but with all of the snow they didn't. I told my husband and he said call him back and tell him we're on our way!!! We love them sooo much!! |
pets The coat on a show dog is what catches our eye. Cut the coat off and you can see what makes a show dog..good structure for a start. If you wrapped a pet quality, kept them in full show coat length, did an class A top knot, then it would be harder to weed out the pet from show at a glance. Last week at a show I saw two pet quality in the enteries. One had a terrible sloped topline (down at the shoulders) the other was very sooty and wavy..but that really is what showing is about...you enter a dog and have it compared to the standard and see if you are breeding quality. That is how dog shows began..a place for breeders to see other dogs and compare their stock...! AND it is possible to finish pet quality dogs..champion in front of a name does not always mean quality. There are judges who put up Yorkies who should be at home giving and receiving love. I have both, pets and show dogs..they are all YORKIES to the bone...and wonderful. |
It is so wonderful there are so many types of Yorkies for each person's own liking. Show, champion, pet, etc.... Schatzie is definitely not show or champion but she's pretty to me when all dolled up. Her personality makes her my little champion girl!! Now I've been in the process of adopting a show quality little girl. Now watch, this little one might be a perfect show Yorkie with all the qualifications needed but have the personality of a little brat, LOL.... I have never seen a Yorkie I didn't think was precious though!! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. :D |

Mia is BEAUTIFUL!! :aimeeyork |
pup You know sometimes it is nothing more then the dog wanting to show and showing well. I have had a few lovely Yorkies get in the ring and sit there like a lump, refuse to walk, lay down, roll in the leaves (my Scooter boy)...on the drive home they give that look..."I told you I did not want a show career". LOL Mia knows she is beautiful..her blue is blue! |
