New member with questions Hello ! I was a member of this forum a long time ago (20 years ago) under the same name. I now have a Yorkie again, after all those years. I always had dogs in between. This one is my third yorkie and the first one I got that wasn’t a young puppy. I got him at 12 months old and he is now 16 months old. I remember my others being hard to housebreak (100% outside) but this one is something else. At 16 months, he still won’t empty his bladder completely most of the time (I had him neutered) and he needs to go outside every 2-3 hours or he will have an accident. I am home most of the time and I do let him out very often. He can’t hold it at night 95% of the time and has to wear a diaper for the night. I started taking them off yesterday, so he can feel when he soils his bed, in the hopes he will learn. Using pee pads is not an option. I thought I would ask if anyone maybe had a similar situation and their dog eventually learned and became reliable ? I’m just looking for hope I guess… Thanks ! :-) |
Welcome back, I don't know if I can offer you a solution, just need a little bit more information. How much does your pup weigh. |
Hello, he is 5.6 lbs but he needs to lose a bit of weight, he should be around 5.2 lbs. |
Small pups have small bladders so can't hold urine for long periods. Let me see if I can find someone that has more experance since I never ran into a problem such as yours. |

I just want to update that after removing his diaper at night (3 nights), there was urine in his bed and on him every night. He’s had three partial baths in row so I’m putting the diaper back on tonight. He can’t have a bath everyday. |
There are shampoos and conditioners for frequent baths. Look on chewy.com in their search bar type in shampoo for frequent dog baths there is a large selection. Conditions should be used, not so much for pups hair, more for pups skin so it doesn't get dried and flaky. |

There is definitely a huge difference between a dog being incontinent vs difficult to housebreak. Hope you figure it out. Good luck |
