First Day in Real Time Well my boy is finally here. Dutch is 12 weeks old. After having read countless books, I must say that I am surprised at how well behaved and mannered he is, although I know that will change w/ his 'teenage' months. He was scared for the first half hour or so but calmed down after I let him explore the house. I follows me around and cries a little if I leave his side, but he is perfectly content to nibble on a bone quietly if I give him the option. Fortunately, when he is sleepy, he walks right into his crate and curls up for a nap. He is used to having food out all day, and I intend to feed him at discrete times, so that will take some getting used to. The only other anomaly is that he has been here for like 5 hours and hasn't had to potty yet-- seems strange to me. He has definitely had a lot of water to drink and has had some nibbles but not a full meal yet. Anyone have any tricks to induce defication or urination? |
You could jump up and down and do a mock potty dance!!!!! Sorry I know I'm no help your post was just too darn funny. I had to reply, couldn't resist. |
He will do the deed when he needs to.He is gonna need to find just the right spot where he feels safe and protected while he is in such a vulnerable position. You might be on here in a coupla weeks asking how to train him to go potty in a specific place.. can't they just make us nuts? Unless you are home ALL day EVERY day, I wonder why you are going to change his feeding schedule.. These young Yorkies need food and waterr at their disposal all the time til they're potty trained and settled in and calm.. |
My rationale for changing the feeding is that he was used to having food left out all day, but my vet and trainer have advised against that. The vet, because of health; the trainer, because he says it will make potty training far easier if he eats 3 meals at set times every day. Do people generall agree or disagree with that? |
I feed my puppy 3 times a day sometimes 4. About the same time everyday. I leave water out all day. |

I leave dry out all day at home because she is a picky eater and needs to keep her weght on while she's growing. At the daycare they feed her twice. Lol when they let her out she runs around and steals all the other puppies food that are too close to the end of their play pens :). She's alone because of her size but she is the only one aloud to run around the store and socialize! It's a pet supply/doggie daycare and puppies are kept in play pens up front and adults in a large play area in the back. As far as her going potty she is 100% pad trained and hasn't had a mistake in a few weeks. She will go outside as well which is exactly what I want, trained for both. Sheila is almost 16 weeks and gets her last set of puppy shots this week. |
Well he finally peed. I was in the other room on the phone, and I walked in to find him standing on the pad doing his business, it was quite a relief. Not sure how he knew where to go. I did sprinkle a few drops of a fluid that's supposed to let them know it's the right place, so maybe that helped? |
Wow, sounds like Dutch is quite the little gentleman! It took Tia forever to go potty on the first day we had her home as well. Sounds like he is doing wonderful! :) |
Sounds like Dutch is doing great in his new home. Congratulation on your new puppy!! |
