Airline travelling Hello! So I've never flown with a dog.. I will be going to visit family this summer and am trying to decide whether to fly with Flint or drive. Driving is a 2 day trip with 1 sleep. Flying can range from about 6hrs to 8 depending on the airline and stops. Flying would get us to our destination much faster but what do we do with our dog if they need to go to the bathroom? I'm kind of leaning on delta airline. United is not who I will go with if possible. Anyone have travel tips? If you have done both Flying and driving such a long distance, which did you prefer? |
I prefer driving and hate flying because it’s such a pain. I have never flown with a dog but I flew a lot from an infant on up. I have driven many times with dogs and a dog some just a day to travel and other several days. Driving just worked better because you could take what you wanted and need and was more comfortable. Some airports have certain doggy potty places and others you have to go all the way out of the airport. |

Lots to think about!! |
It took two and half days to drive from Nevada to Wisconsin; it was fun and easy and comfortable for my bro, myself and Piper. I always let the motels know I had Piper and there was never any issue (or added expense) with Pipe staying in my room. I highly recommend driving---you have the control, you make the decisions. Good luck and have fun!! |
I prefer to drive with the fur butt. We can stop for as many potty breaks as needed. Matters not to me how long the drive is, I love driving. |
Thanks everyone! After several flights purchased because I kept changing my mind on where to fly into and then rent a car, I cancelled all flights and will just drive it all. |
Oh and I found d a console pet carrier and we tried it out yesterday. It fit great in my smaller car and Flint did well! |
Wise choice to drive and Mr Flintastic will be much more comfortable. I would check motels along your route to make sure they accept dogs. I have read Best Western does but there are many that do. I personally would not chance just stopping at any motel especially Flint is a puppy, he will be in new surroundings with new smells and sounds, he may bark at all that he hears. Motels that accept dogs and ppl that use dog friendly motels accept these conditions. My fur butt would bark in new surroundings and he's 11 years old. |
I have flown several times with my Yorkies and never had any issue. I haven’t been to an airport yet that doesn’t have a potty station. And my dogs fit comfortably under the seat I would say the only airline I didn’t like was American, under the seat was very small in that airline. |
When there is an opportunity to fly, I will fly. My experiences were fine , airports now have dog relieve areas if need be, with TSA Pre/Clear the process for the dog was easy peezy too. There's an additional cost to fly so that's always a consideration. Dog personality also makes a difference on the ease of travel. My boy Troy( now at the rainbow bridge) traveled without any anxiety meds, was quiet and never knew he was about but that was his personality. Emma on the other hand needs a little more care as she's a nervous Nelly. Driving has its pros as well for both owner and dog , which Ive done as well. All just a matter of preference. |
