New rescue and need advice and tips please! A lot!

We are rescuing a 4 yr old Yorkie from a rescue center.

They believe her to be house trained but I'd like tips on making her feel comfortable at night time and anything else!

She used to sleep with her owner but has been in a kennel with another dog. As we've no other pets I'm mindful her first night would be scary alone..how can we overcome as ideally we'd like her downstairs if possible, small galley kitchen. She's not crate trained.

What harness do you recommend as I know some say they're too heavy etc, we'll also be popping her in the car on the way back with us.

What transport aids do you use if any if the
y get tired?

Also food is raw and nature something but they're unsure which one? Anyone know which is best naturo or?

Yorkies are social animals. Leaving her alone in a kitchen at night is not something I would do.
Poor thing slept with her owner and then ended up in a crate and now is going to be alone in a kitchen.
Also, no way would I feed raw.
I don't know what popping her in a car means?
Harnesses....go to Petsmart and look at the many they have.

You've twisted my words! I'm being factual, she slept with the owner, is not crate trained and we are looking to make her feel at home on arrival.. although in an ideal world we'd like her in the kitchen at night we know it may not be possible as per above!..thus tips welcome.

As for raw food that was previous owner.. rescue said to keep the same to reduce anxiety. Popping heron the car I'd like tips on harness as again we'd like her to be comfortable when we collect her

I didn't twist your words. I just don't see keeping a pup in the kitchen alone at night as a nice thing for them. If you work all day which most people do, then the pup is along all day....then night in a room alone would be a sad thing. That is ALL I am saying. Yorkies are social animals. Until housebroken (if she ever totally is...yorkies can be tough) perhaps you can use diapers/panties for her.

I am not a raw food fan. Perhaps someone else can advise you if that is what you plan to do.

I don't know about harnesses for the car....I am sure someone will advise you on one that will be helpful.

LOL I don't work either. My pups sleep in my bed. I wouldn't dream of putting them in another room. Just me.

Honestly I would keep her in the bedroom it just is not fair to her to be alone at night especially in a new environment. If she’s not terrified of a crate I would attempt to crate her at night and put the crate where she can see you with a blanket over top. Getting them used to a crate is extremely important because they are used in emergencies, for any stays at Vets and groomers and so on. Another option would be to set up an exercise pen in your bedroom and have a bed for her in there. I love the buddy belt harnesses because they don’t put any pressure on their tracheas and last their lifetime normally. Step in harnesses are generally better. I use a snoozer car seat in the car where it’s like an elevated bed and there are many different types and brands out there. I would stop the raw because it isn’t safe and posses health risks to not just her but anyone who comes in contact with her. I would try maybe some wet food mixed with dry food in a good brand like Royal Canin.

Hi, Get a plastic hard crate for transport (small or xtra small depending on her size) and then make sure your seatbelt goes through the handle. That way if you need to stop suddenly she won't be affected. Also, the first couple of nights might be good to have her in a crate nearby your bed so she can see you. That will make her feel more secure. I might not put her in the bed right away since she is not used to it, if she falls or jumps off, she could break her neck. So many dangers lurking for the little ones. Good luck to you and thank you for rescuing! Please keep us posted on how it goes for you.

Also forgot to say, try to find out what food she's been eating and if you are going to switch to a different food, do it gradually, there are many articles online with how to change their food. When you take her to the Vet, talk to the him/her with how to do it and/or what to feed - otherwise, you may end up with a Yorkie that has stomach issues and diarrhea. Perhaps get a good probiotic from the Vet to help her stomach.

As ladyjane suggested, go to Pet Supplies, Pet Smart, PetCo and look at the harnesses they have. I don't know why anyone would say a harness is "heavy". You do not need a special harness to take your pup in a car, whatever harness you choose to walk the dog can be used in a car as well.
I take my fur kid with me a lot, he has a booster seat that is elevated off the passenger seat, he can see out of the window, this also helps eliminates car sickness. There are many types of booster seats, you can google " dog booster seats" and choose what you think would be ideal for your new pup, I suggest getting a larger one that may go by weight of dog, this way there is extra room for the dog to lay down and sleep.
I am also not a fan of raw dog food because of the bacteria factor, however, this dog will be coming to a new home, with you as a new person, new smells, sound, sights, schedules, kinda over whelming for a wee lil fur baby. For this reason only, I suggest keeping her on the same raw food as she was eating until she is fully settled in and adjusted to her new home. Then gradually transition her to a good quality kibble. Sorry I cannot suggest any raw foods as I never fed any of my dogs raw.
My kid sleeps in my bed with me, that's how I trained him. Your new baby may find it hard adjusting to sleeping alone since she did sleep with her prev. owner, she may cry, whine or bark for several days or longer while going through this adjustment, even tho you wrote she was in a kennel with another dog that does not mean in a real home with new humans she will accept sleeping alone, even in the kennel she wasn't truly alone, there was another dog with her.
Keep in mind yorkies have no under coat, they have hair, they must be kept warm especially at night with no drafts around, whatever bed you select I suggest putting a balnket in it so she can dig a little nest to cuddle into.

When I get a new pup or there has been some type of surgery, I put him/her in our dog stroller right next to me by the bed. I can put my hand in and comfort as needed but it still works as a kennel. As time goes on, yep, they are in our bed. :)

Thank you all! So I've ordered a bed and blanket, I have asked rescue what food she's on but it's one of two so when settled will talk to vet about dry food change 💗. Thank you for the comments re transport etc!
