Question about first heat Zoe is my first female puppy so I am inexperienced. She is 5 months old and Willie has recently started feverishly sniffing at her vulva and trying to hump her. Does this mean she is close to going into heat? Both of my males are neutered. But I don’t want her going into heat at all. I had planned her spay at 6 months. Should I call the vet and schedule for next week? |
Small dogs can go into their first heat cycle as early as four months of age, although six months is more common. So your pup could very well be going into heat. Call your vet and discuss the timing of her spay surgery. There is a somewhat higher incidence of surgical complications when dogs are spayed while in heat, due to the swelling in the surgical area. Your vet should be able to discuss the pros and cons with you. |

Thanks for the information. I take my boys in for a dental next week. Maybe I can schedule her spay at the same time. Hoping she isn’t really going in heat. She seems so young. |
i wonder how long does the first heat last? |
A lot of time humping is about dominance in neutered animals but its possible. Mine smell each others privates pretty often. I have yet to have a female go into heat on me I don't know if I have been lucky or what, I had Callie spayed at 9 months, got Penny at 8 months and had her spayed after a few weeks, and then I had Dixie spayed at 6 months. My preferred is 6 months. |

When I didn't know how serious not spaying females were, my girls went into heat every 6 months like clock work, I always wrote it on the calendar. Its one week coming into heat where the vulva starts to swell One week is actual bleeding One week where the bleeding decreases, vulva starts shrinking back and all bleeding ends. So in total, heat cycle lasts for 3 weeks. |
I talked to my vet and we are going to wait another month. She doesn’t appear to be swollen. If she should go into heat, both of my boys are neutered. So she will be safe. |
My first female was gotten back in the 70's, spaying was advised to prevent Mammary tumors, there was never mention of Pyometra, not even did the vets tell you about it. I found out about Pyometra when my 14 year old got it. It was to late, her uterus erupted sending puss through out her veins, she died in horrible pain. 6 months later my other girl had Pyometra, but I knew the signs, that was caught in time and surgery was performed and saved her life. The girls I had spayed were spayed at 6 months old. That seems to be the average spaying age as most females go into heat at that age. Some of these tiny yorkies can go into heat later than 6 months. Its always best to follow your vets advise. Your neutered males humping is most likely a dominance thing, showing your little girl he is the boss lol, typical male lol. You can control this behavior by telling him in a firm voice to leave it or whatever word command of your choice. |
