Heartworm permalink Nikkibella Hello to all I'm new to YorkieTalk. My Yorkie Nik is a male weights 6.5 lbs My question to all with toy breed I would like to know what heartworm medicine you give you fur babies. I just can't understand heartguard plus for dogs up to 25lbs.. Up to 25lbs?? I would say that's very strong hw given to a 6 lb dog.. Is there anything other than HG anyone with small dogs use ? Just want to hear from my fellow Yorkie Members. Thank you so much! |
I use heartgard and know a lot of people who use it with small dogs and it is actually the safest one as per my vet. I was nervous giving it to my youngest when she was 3 pounds but I was reassured by my vet and friends with smaller yorkies that it was fine. There is also interceptor. |
My guys do much better with interceptor. The heartgard used to give the loose stool, and we have not had that problem with interceptor. |
My kid is on Simparica, he is not a tiny boy. |
My 6lb girl is on HeartGard Plus with no issues. It's a "meaty" chewable. I can't get pills down her even when I hide them in peanut butter, etc. She licks the peanut butter and leaves the pill on the floor. |
I use Simparica Trio they have smaller doses for different weights. My Bella gets one up to 11 pounds and Thumper is 11.5 - 25 pounds. I have never had an issue. |
I have used Heartgard since around 1999 on all size pups. My Kiche who is 2.75 lbs is on Heartgard. BTW you cannot compare one med dose to another med dose. They are not equivalent. Just because some sell by weight, does not mean that up to 25 lbs in another is not safe. |
My vet recommends Revolution for the little dogs. Works well for us! |
Hi just sharing, our Bella is 3 yrs old about 7 pounds. Our Vet prescribed Revolution and it works well for her. Since we live in Canada our Vet says she only needs it from April to October here due to our colder weather. We think it's good for Bella as well, since she doesn't like to chew tablets. |
