Spaying advice Advice needed please. Neurotic dog mom asking... My little one is 9months and weighs 1.6kg, she is due to be spayed next week and I am petrified, I know for health reasons it is necessary but is the surgery as dangerous as I have heard. Please advise your thoughts and any tips, suggestions you may have. :) |
Spaying your baby girl is absolutely necessary and extends the lifetime of your precious baby. 3 1/2 pounds (1.6kg) is not a dangerous weight for spaying. Make sure your vet does blood work before the spay to ensure her liver can filter the anesthesia. Blood work is very important, some vets will skip the blood work to keep the cost for the surgery down for their clients. We all go through this panic mode when our babies need any kind of surgery. She will be fine, just make sure the blood work is done. Many members use baby Onesie's after the surgery to keep the pup from licking the incision, just a suggestion. |
thank you so much, really appreciate your advice. |

You need to have confidence in your vet, so you’re sure he/she won’t cut any corners, which might sacrifice the safety of your pup. Here’s a good list of pre-anesthesia questions. If your vet won’t take the time to answer the questions and reassure you as to safety measures, find one who will! https://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yo...-protocol.html |
It’s normal to be worried. It’s a very routine surgery that many vets have done thousands of times. I wouldn’t say it’s super dangerous but it has its risks like any surgery. Make sure you do pre surgery blood work and due to the size of your pup make sure they have a way to keep her warm during surgery like a heated operating table. If she has any baby teeth that haven’t fallen out make sure to have the vet go ahead and remove them while she is under. I used a spay recovery suit with my youngest at night so she didn’t have to sleep in a cone. |
