Is there an age we can’t walk them as much?
 
Getting nice spring weather and taking Dexter out for a walk. Cool temps and just for 15 minutes. He seems to be panting a lot for this short of time. Dexter is 9 years old.

Is that normal for him? I'd do a vet visit if not.

Jackson is 12 (will be 13 in October) and will still gladly hike for miles. I would never push him harder than what he is capable of. He still just has loads of energy to burn off and as long as he's willing to keep going, we keep going. Just a few months ago we did approx 4 mile hike and he could've kept going (me on the other hand - am way more out of shape lol).

This winter has been a brutal one and I’ve not been able to hardly take him out for more than a bathroom trip. I’m just being cautious.

Yeah, excessive panting on a cool day on slow 15 min walk would personally not to normal, for Jackson anyway. I know every dog is different. But when it's cool outside (like colder than approx 50 degrees F), we can do a 30 minute walk with zero panting.

Oh goodness I take Razzle out in 40 weather, if it's sunny, and not too windy. I personally worry more about paw pads freezing or ice blistering. It is why he has weather proof booties. Which he hates, btw. But he lives his walks more.

Now I worry more about hot summer days. And he's about 13:14 years young. But I'm planning to take the pups dock diving, and picnicking. In the summer of course.

I do hope you share dock diving videos with us, I just love seeing your pups leaping off that platform, especially Mr. Razzle.

If he would just do a normal walk. He wants to drag my lazy butt as fast as he can go. He has one speed wide open 🙄

I think your pooch will let you know if he's not so into walks anymore. Piper still wants to go, but is sometimes sore after, so I kinda monitor that and factor lengths of walks accordingly...Some days we go 1/2 mile, others we go for 2 and 1/2 miles; it depends on weather and our moods!

It’s hard to keep them in the house after a cold and snowy winter for sure

In winter months, we just walk about a block . I'm sure Emma can do more but I can't. LOL Warmer months, we walk longer in the mornings and evenings . Mid day is just a potty break.

I think its possible to walk too much but that's dog dependent. Just like humans, everyone's health and stamina vary.
