Transitioning food. Hey Guys! It’s been a while since I have posted. But I could really use some help. We had 3 yorkies. Anna was our oldest around 14/15 years old. For the last few years of her life we had to play around with food to get her to eat. So the boys, who are now 8, had a pretty bad diet too. She would only eat wet little ceasars and baby food chicken. The boys would eat this too. She passed on New Years Day. We have been caught up in grief and kind of just treading water. But it is time for me to get the boys back to a healthy diet so they will be with us many more years. They have always eaten royal canin for yorkies dry food. I want to keep them on this. But I want to totally get rid of the wet food. I need help. I have been mixing the wet with dry and they just eat around the dry. Has anyone been able to wean older dogs off of wet food? If so, please give suggestions. |
My suggestion is only put out dry food. When they get hungry enough, they will eat anything. This is where tough love comes in on your part. |
Maybe you could start by soaking the dry food to make it kinda like wet food? |
To be honest, there is nothing wrong with feeding wet food. It's not "unhealthier" than kibble. Some commercial canned foods are maybe higher in fat, so something to watch out for, but often times IMO canned food is better than kibble and easier on their system to digest. If you want to switch to solely kibble for cost reasons - certainly you can. But mixing in wet food is not going to make them unhealthier so if they like it, I wouldn't be worried about continuing doing it. To keep them healthy as possible, I'd focus on regular veterinarian visits (2x a year at least, for seniors), general bloodwork to keep an eye on things, daily tooth brushing, feed a properly balanced food (which RC is), keep them lean and fit and on daily walks or another form of exercise. |
Ok. So I tried tough love. That did not work. Little Willie was crying by bedtime and we couldn’t take it. But we did a mix of the wet with dry after their starve out. They ate it all. So... we are going to continue mixing wet and dry and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestions. I feel better knowing the wet isn’t that bad for them. I suppose we are all just missing Anna. Maybe they will eat better as time goes on. |
