Yorkie/Poo digestive issues Hello, I need some advise on my 12 yr old sweet girl Autumn. Since 3 months old, she has had intestinal issues. Found after tons of tests that she has food allergies. She can only have venison or lamb. Since this last September her intestines are acting up. Bloody diarrhea, very little vomiting. She was put on an antibiotic and couple weeks later back to normal, until about three weeks ago. Very bad explosive very bloody stool. Stomach very noisy and lack of appetite. Took her in she was put on an antibiotic, but didn’t help much. Vet then put her on Amoxi Drops plus FortiFlora. Extensive blood work done. Stool sample showed no bacteria in stool. Also put her on K/Z science diet. She then had excessive thirst. Drinking water in excess of 30x per day and wanting to go out after drinking. Her stools were formed and no longer bloody. This went on for about ten days, finally vet said take her off the K/Z because I kept telling him that’s when the thirst and frequent urinating started. I read that FortiFlora can cause thirst so I stopped giving her that also. Within a day, she was down to drinking about ten times per day and going out. She does not go out or want to drink from 8 pm to 8 am. Today she woke up with a very noisy tummy. She’s not thirsty and total loss of appetite. I gave her pumpkin which she normally loves, but would not eat it. I put tiny pieces of a lamb treat mixed in, she then ate it. I guess my main question is, what is a probiotic that I can give her that doesn’t cause excessive thirst? And a different food that would help her digestive tract? I feel so limited because of her food allergies. Her diet now is Zignature Lamb. I would appreciate any input. |
If she has a true food allergy she needs to come off any commercial food because they all come in contact with all ingredients in the factory and she needs to go back on a prescription food. I had good luck with Royal Canin Hydrolyzed small breed maybe ask your vet for a prescription for that food to at least try it. I am thinking she has IBD which is food allergy related. I have never had a probiotic work well with IBD and stopped trying with my girl who had it. |
Yorkie Poo/Digestive Issues Thank you for response. I was reading up on the Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein Dog Food and it stated a warning due to it being grain free food that contains legumes or potatoes and that this diet may be implicated in the FDA's ongoing investigation in to diet-related DCM a potentially fatal heart condition. Autumn has a mild heart murmur so that really concerned me. Have you ever heard of this? |

Autumn I am just sick, she just went outside now and her stool is solid red blood again. Want to just sit down and cry. I just don't know what triggered it again. I am feeding her same food she has been eating for 3+ years. |

What do you feed the babies you have now? Really confusing on food choices reading people’s comments. Autumn has some kidney issues but main kidney tests were ok so I am still concerned about too much protein. People mention a lot about the corn in the RC diet and their pets itch. I guess every pet is different. I really appreciate you talking with me today. |

You’re probably back at the vet today after the bloody poo yesterday, so hopefully you’re getting some good advice and support there. One thing you might explain, when you’re up to it, is what exactly you mean by your pup’s stool being “solid red blood.” Is it just liquid blood ... or diarrhea mixed with blood ... or solid poo covered in blood? Is it the same as has happened previously or different? Knowing that might help find someone who has had similar issues in the past and can give you some input, since there are so many different kinds of issues that can cause blood in poo. On the probiotic, I’ve read that probiotics can cause increased thirst during the “adjustment period.” But, then again, some pups (and people) never adjust. The only thing I can suggest is possibly lowering the dosage or maybe trying something less harsh like plain greek yogurt, which has the same kinds of strains of good bacteria but probably smaller numbers of them. Good luck. Let us know how things go. |

I had a long conversation with our Vet this morning. Since Autumn has food allergies, he feels the food she is on may be triggering the diarrhea, even though it was Lamb which is a good source to eat with breeds with food allergies.. SO switching out the food and the probiotic. Regarding her poo...it’s soupy with lots of blood. Today it was formed but soft, no blood. So thankful for that. I have a prescription paste I gave her 2x yesterday and that always helps with the diarrhea. It’s called Proviable. In fact, the probiotic that she will be on is also Proviable, but caplets that I need to open and sprinkle over her food. When she was three months old she had the vomiting and bloody stools. After $3000 worth of testing finally found out it was food related. She would have a few bouts of vomiting over the years but not bloody stool until last September. She will be 13 in August. I had her on the FortiFlora for over two weeks and the Thirst never subsided. I knew it took time thru the adjustment period but it seemed to worsen each day so took her off. She still drinks and pees about ten times a day, which is still out of her norm, but it’s a whole lot better than 30+ times per day. She does have some kidney issues, but Vet said the more important kidney tests are good. But he does want a urine sample once she is feeling better. Thankful my beautiful baby is playful today and feeling better. I hope the new food and probiotic will help, if not I will have extensive GI testing done on her. |
