Weight Gain Gidget just turned 5 last month. When she saw the Vet in May of last year she weighed 5.6lbs. I weighed her last week and she weighs 6.8lbs. That may not sound like a lot but it's a substantial weight gain for her. I've cut out all tastes of human tidbits from the table (i.e. bites of chicken, etc.) It's so cold now that we aren't getting as much walking during the day. Our usual walk was 40-45 minutes first thing in the morning and then at least 2 30-35 min walks during the rest of the day. Any suggestions for getting her weight down under 6lbs. |
Technically, at five she’s considered a senior (even though she should have many, many healthy years ahead of her), so her metabolism may be slowing down a little. Does the food you use come in a low calorie or low activity variety? Sometimes that is better than reducing portion sizes. On the exercise, is there something you can do inside to burn up some excess calories? I haven’t been taking Jax out much because of the weather (and, really, he walks so slowly outside — investigating every pebble, weed, and blade of grass — that it barely counts as exercise), but he will chase a squeaky ball inside until he drops from exhaustion. |
I'm feeding her Purina Pro Plan Adult with chicken and rice dry. I feed her the recommended portion on the bag -- 1/4 c twice a day. Of course, it has fewer calories so she isn't as satisfied. As a treat I give her 5 of her regular dog food bites so that seems to satisfy her. She doesn't really like to play with her toys. Got her when she was very young so she never had the experience of playing with the others in the litter. She loves her walks outside so that is what we are doing depending on the weather. I've been feeding her twice a day -- 1/4 c each time. Would it help her weight if I reduced that to 1/3 c divided between 2 meals? |
