Doggy Doors There are other threads on here about doggy doors....I personally will not use one because I want to know where my pups are and don't want them outside willy nilly. BUT, there are other reasons not to use them such as other animals coming IN . I laughed at this BUT it is scary. I would have been out of the house, calling someone to come get that thing. Many, many years ago, when I lived in Southern California, my dog at the time (a lhasa apso) had a doggie door. However, she was close to twenty pounds, the back yard was small & securely surrounded by a tall solid wood fence, and I was in an area where wildlife & predators were very rare. I would never let (almost) five pound Jax outside by himself. Our house is surrounded by woods filled with predators, and we also have hawks and vultures overhead. I also would never tell (or allow) a dog to “git” a raccoon. The raccoon could have rabies and, even if not, could be vicious if cornered. Although, better a raccoon than a skunk. |

Yeah, I would have been OUT of my house and not left my dogs there either. |
I wouldn’t have one if mine weren’t bigger and if I ever had a smaller yorkie I wouldn’t be using it but...... we had a baby bird some how end up coming through it in the house. My dad was already at work and my mom is terrified of birds but she got it out. I really should have recorded it even though she threatened to kill me. One of my moms friends took their dog outside and they ran over to the neighbors house and went in their doggy door when no one was home lol. Then there was Callie’s last hurrah where either she killed the baby bunny or her brother did and she brought it in the house dripping blood everywhere. One of the dogs I grew up with would bring live toads in the house and set them free. Right now Dixie is to small and potty training so ours is closed for now and she learned how to take the cover off so I had to tape it. I also have doggy doors on my bedroom and office so if I want privacy from other humans they can still come and go. |
We put a cat flap in Bon Bon's puppy pen so he could go in and out to avoid his big brother. Then we realized that he hated to push the door open with his head. We put a drain pipe with an elbow in front of the cat flap and propped it open with the elbow. It didn't take long before Bon Bon was stealing his big brother's smaller toys and dashing off to his pen to play with them in peace. Arthur looking at where his little brother went. |
I do have a dog door, very small, cat size that my yorkies used (RIP) as adults, but it opens into an enclosure, so I feel fairly safe with that. I have raccoons and skunks, that is about it but since I have the enclosure/ dog run so I don't really worry. |
If something unusual catches Piper's eye when she is inside, she frantically barks and paws at patio door until I can let her out...or not! And depending on what she sees (varmint, deer, the rare loose pooch), she is practically out-the-door before I slide it all the way open. Even though her area is securely fenced, her speed and determination to "get" the intruder surprises me 'most every time. I, of course, am right there to monitor all this activity IF I let Pipe out and believe me, there are several times that Piper has to wait inside until "the threat" (deer???) are safely away. I would be very uncomfortable if Piper were able to go outside at will, as there are just too many variables that could cause problems. Plus, Piper is already too independent for our own good; I want her to know she can turn to me to (hopefully) strengthen our connection! |
