Hello,
I purchased my Yorkie almost 9 years ago from a reputable breeder. I am just curious what is the average cost today in the southeastern region of the US? Is the demand higher now due to COVID-19?

Prices are definitely increased now because of demand for them. Normally they were between $1,500 to $2500 but I think right now they are on the higher side.

Prices are over the top crazy. I know what it cost to raise a litter and for a pet quality puppy paying those prices are a little nuts.

Yorkies are in very high demand in today's society, prices are outrageous, but ppl pay because they want these wee lil babies.

It seems high but considering everything that goes into it and what a reputable breeder puts into it I doubt they make a lot of money. If you are going by a good breeder that keeps the puppies until 12 weeks you have tail docking and dew claw removal at a few days old and preferably done by the vet, then at 8 weeks old first distemper/parvo shots, another distemper parvo shot at around 12 weeks plus a health check before going to the new home. Many good breeders will give you limited AKC registration, a small bag of food, a toy, some treats and lots of paper work in a puppy go home package. A really good breeder has done health and genetic testing on their breeding pair which can be expensive. Many good breeders expose their puppies to lots of different things while the puppies are in their care so they are well balanced pups. Generally good breeders do not breed every heat so if they are raising the dogs in the house which they should be then the number they can have is also limited. Keeping the puppy up to 12 weeks can be expensive which is why bad breeders don't do it. You go through A LOT of puppy pads, food, and I'm sure toys. Then you think about the care for the pregnant female during the pregnancy, while birthing and then after and it adds up quickly even if things go well. Add a show breeder to this and their cost goes up even more. As things get more expensive their prices have to go up to. So while yes it seems expensive I can completely understand it. Your still going to spend probably twice that in the first year if you include everything you have to get and do for the puppy.

The problem is that back yard breeders sell puppies for the same prices or even more. Puppies who haven’t received any medical care, puppies with genetic defects, puppies only six to eight weeks old, puppies with worthless CKC registrations, mixed breed “designer” puppies and/or mixed breeds sold as purebred puppies .... Buyers have to be super careful, but there aren’t enough quality breeders to supply the current demand.

Oh yeah definitely you as the buyer have to really put your work in and decided what is important to you and with the breeder you choose. I think a huge issue is that people want what they want when they want it so they would rather gamble the chance with a bad breeder then put their name on a list with a good breeder and wait several months or sometimes a year. With lots of people having to stay home they want puppies now too.

When i was looking i went through probably 10 different breeders in the area.
I ended up making a check list to copy and paste LOL. AKC litter #, 1 year health contract, sire and dam health check within 3 months of litter, home inspection prior to deposit, and anything else annoying. Just so i could weed out the backyard breeders. I was close to giving up.


Find a reputable breeder and get put on a wait list. You'll save so much time in the end. Back yard breeders/ "designer" breeders always charge more, they're banking on one pup selling.
