Yorkie tolerance of cold or hot weather |
@Matese Thanks for sharing. Interesting read. I don't necessarily live in an area with extreme temperatures and I don't walk Emma for more than 15 minutes (2x a day) to be honest. She is outdoor trained and her potty times during high/low temperatures is very quick. I'm not the biggest fan of dog clothes but I do have a few sweaters for Emma as I know in the winter she catches chills easily. A raincoat though is a bit harder for me to get given she's not out that long to need one. |
Born and raised in NYC my dogs were walked in rain, hail, sleet and snow twice a day, I had a pack of 3 at that time. They had the proper coats, sweaters and yes yellow slicker rain coats, the momma had the umbrella lol. One year we had a blizzard, everything closed down, at 7:30AM their walk time, sidewalks were not yet shoveled and a plow never plowed that street. I had a small terrace, I took my girls there, nope momma, we ain't gonna do it here. Those girls waited until 9AM when parts of sidewalks were cleared to do their business lol. Now living in Pa. in my own home I just open the back door and Cody is out and in. I do have to shovel a path for him when we get heavy snow falls, anything over his paws he will not walk in it lol. |
@matese I love it. It's cute, I just can't do it. I'm glad that Emma will go out without issue when she has to potty. I tried pads when it snowed by the door, she looked at me with those brown eyes, that Nope look and said in her doggy telepathy way open the door. |
Piper has more winter sweaters than I and she makes good use of them. She also has a sheepskin harness for our winter walks. I have yet to find boots that I can get on Piper's feet, so when it's icy and or below 20 degrees, we usually don't go out cuz she feels it on her feet first, lifting one paw then the other until I scoop her up! I have to shovel her deck and then shovel a few yards of snow off the grass so she can "go" since she's only about 9" tall! She sort of likes running through snow if it's light and fluffy, otherwise she gets balled up and bogged down and that's not fun for either of us! Piper is real good about going out when it's really cold, although I DO have to pick her up and set her outside. Once out, she makes short order of doing her business and races back inside. We are very, very much alike, Piper and I!! |
2 Attachment(s) Jackson needs exercise or he drives me crazy lol..... so we go out in all kinds of weather. He has a nice winter coat, a nice rain coat, and a few sweaters. We go for walks in the rain as long as it's not POURING but even when it is, he still has to potty, so we will put the rain coat on for even a 3 min outing in the pouring rain so that he doesn't come back in soaked. If it's just light rain we don't bother for quick potty breaks. Overall he actually prefers colder weather to warm - he can walk for miles in the fall and winter whereas in the summer it is just too hot. He prefers to be in the water. |

Maggie loves the cold! She's perfectly happy in the 30's.. she moves fast but I can tell she likes it.. when we get home she does zoom about, I'm assuming to warm up. She's not a fan of clothes. She prefers cool to warm. Rain? Forget about it. Snow? Even worse. We have to shovel her a spot and for poo time we have to make sure the spot is big enough for her to walk around to find just the right spot! |

All that cuteness |
Thanks for posting. I usually do not walk my dogs on a leash if it is under 40 degrees even with their coats. But, we do go outside for a few minutes. Thankfully, we were able to walk yesterday at 46 degrees. Hooray! I do notice that they need some type of inside exercise if I don't walk them. In fact, Jazzy has made up her own exercise games to play with me and taught me what to do. Ha. |

Best advice I ever read (and it was on this site) is that if it's too cold for you, it's too cold for your dog. So Fabian has lots of sweaters, coats and hats. (Still haven't gotten him to wear boots yet.) The next-door neighbor smirks at his little caps, scarves, and hoods, but she lets her teenagers wait at the bus stop in shorts in mid-winter, so what does she know? <g> |
