Safe while walking my Yorkies

...3 days ago while walking one of my 2 yorkies....out of nowhere 2 big dogs (Husky and German shepherd) came running, charging at us.....in 1/2 second I was able to carry Runty and open my umbrella (as a shield). They left ...but my heart skipped a beat and I was shaking....(Runty also kept shaking).
.....later at home I found 2 small scratches on my abdomen. I guess one dog jumped on me.....I cant remember....
...I read some time ago about carrying an automatic- open umbrella. Best advice ever !!!
...I cant tell if the dogs were aggressive or just playing( one was barking)...but I am not taking any chances.

I have been there, years ago in a campground.
A HUGE Alaskan Husky was upon us, came from behind me as I was walking my girl, I never saw that dog coming. All I heard was my dog screaming, I looked down and there's my sweet girl, on her back in a submissive position with this HUGE Husky over her, I grabbed her up, she was traumatized, screaming out of fear for over 5 minutes. That poor girl, every single walk at home she always looked behind her, she never forgot that incident.

The man that owned that husky that was "supposed" to have it on a leash (campground rules) came to me saying the dog was friendly, all the time my girl in my arms was screaming. I told him you know that, but look at my girl, she doesn't know that.

That was before I joined YT and saw the suggestion of using a big black self opening umbrella.

Always look behind you, always be prepared.
You were lucky you were able to swoop your baby up and out of harms way and had that umbrella with you.

Spray for attacks
 

I usually carry a spray but that umbrella is a great idea! Loose dogs are a danger. If you walk your dog be prepared!

I started using my umbrella after a scary attack on my little Jilly when she was on leash and a huge 65 lb. Dalmatian ran from behind some bushes toward us in a way Jilly disliked and my tiny 3 lb. Jilly started for it, teeth bared. It was on her, had her tiny body up in its mouth totally lifted her off the ground - all in the span of two heartbeats while my brain was still processing it all. Thankfully I had carried a walking stick with me that walk and used it to beat the head of the Dalmatian until it finally felt pain as I got to its eyes and backed off but followed us down the block as I walked as fast as I dared w/out re-igniting its prey drive. I had to turn and wave the stick above my head and threaten it in a low, gutteral tone to keep it off her! She was having a seizure in my arms as all this was going on and we finally made it the 3 blocks home.

Immediate vetting revealed she needed all her wounds cleaned and sutured, pain, sedation and antibiotic shot, overnight vet observation and vet tending with a likely sedation, pain medication. She healed well and had no leftover psychological damage, still was totally fearless! I think she would've taken on a Bengal tiger - all 3 lbs. of her!

From that time on I carried my large, black, auto-opening umbrella and never again faced that type of problem as when we went by bushes and things where a big dog could be hidden. I just automatically opened it just in case. That umbrella discourages even the most ardent of prey drives in even the largest, meanest-looking dogs! That lovely, harmless umbrella gives you and your dog a huge, intimidating outline and appears mysteriously out of no where, swooshing open to suddenly enlarge you right before the dog's eyes and whirling it adds to the mystery of it. All aggressive dogs just suddenly lose interest in coming anywhere near you or your little one. Still, it's advisable to avoid a nasty dog when you can as you don't ever want to take a chance with your little one. So glad you had protection with you! Happy future walks!

I always suggest the umbrella , as it’s such a good deterrent.
