Do you walk your furkids? I held off this summer due to the heat. I’ve started walking with him for a half hour . He’s seven is that too far to walk him? |
If he seems ok and no overly tired then he is probably ok. It really depends on the dog. I have seen yorkies go hiking before. |
Piper is a 9 yr old, 10 lb Yorkie and we walk between a mile and two miles everyday. I pretty much let her pick the pace (usually that brisk little terrier trot). Though Piper is tired when we first get home, she almost always becomes a frisky, full-of-the-dickens pooch again later in the day! I think consistent exercise (walking) has been extremely beneficial for both Pipe and me. Her vet is pleased with her overall condition and highly approves of our walks. Of course, everyone is different; you need to pay attention to your pup's enthusiasm for going out, as well as energy level while you are out (and after)! Have big fun!!! |
I think Dexter has come to expect it first thing in the morning after his bathroom break |
By the way, during hot and humid summer days up here in Lake Geneva, WI, we get up very early (4:30/5am) in order to do our walks. As the day heats up we hibernate inside; I totally get avoiding summer temperatures as I CANNOT take the heat at all! |
My walking pups ended the week after moving from NY to Pa. My first week here I was going to walk the community with my then 2 yorkies, I got 5 houses away from mine when all of a sudden a huge Belgium Shepard was upon us. I scooped up both dogs. The man who owned the dog had him on a retractable leash. The man said he stopped to talk to a neighbor, his dog must have heard my dogs tags, pulled the retractable handle out of the mans hand and took off. He said his dog was friendly but my dogs didn't know that. Matese at 17 pounds and 5 years old was screaming out of fear, Schnae at 9 Lbs and 10 years old although a very friendly gal was in attack mode. That ended walks. I do walk Cody once in a while just so he knows the area and if ever got out he would know his way back. There are just to many lose dogs or dogs dashing out of the houses when the owner opens their door. Cody is not dog friendly, he'll take on any size dog. So walks within the community are not comfortable, plus always watching behind me to make sure a dog is not coming at us, then looking towards the sky for hawks. Cody's walks are short and far between. |
Dog walking If you walk your dogs you should carry some spray or stick in case a loose dog attacks. Dont wait till it happens and you or your dog get bit! |

Cody in "Cujo mode" Love it! Now this is where our pooches are different (amazingly enough). Piper loves other little dogs; she runs to them, ears flat, tail going like hummingbird wings--too, too wonderful, such joy. I wrote a thread several years ago about Piper being snatched from my arms by my neighbor's Akita. Terrifying. And lesson well-learned. In Nevada I always worried about big off-leash dogs, everywhere. Now I am extremely fortunate that Lake Geneva is a small town where loose dogs rules are strictly enforced and the threat is decreased, though as a Yorkie walker, I am always vigilant! And being "in the country" we were "watched" one morning by three hawks who came together and finally perched. Very blessed to live here... |
Piper and Cody have incredible power and strength, yes? People cannot believe that my little pup packs such pull power! |

We live in an apartment and I walk Gidget around in the parking lot 3 times a day for about 20 minutes. Of course, along the way she has to sniff and explore but it's HER walking time and not mine. I walk half a mile each day on the inside. She LOVES her leisure walks and so do I. On rainy days and when it's extremely hot, we have to make an exception. |
In the summer, we opt to hang out by the pool that we are lucky enough to have (also lucky that Jackson LOVES to swim!) but usually do walks in the late evenings in the summer time. In fall/winter/most of spring, we love to go for long walks. Jackson will be 12 next month and we just walked 4 miles in Harpers Ferry WV. He doesn't tire very easily as long as it's not too hot. |
We live in an apartment and go for 2 walks with Mike every day, approx. 3-4 miles a day. In hot humid days we do short walks late at night. But every pup is different and prefer different level of activity! |
