puppy food I'm researching food for Milo when he gets to come home. The breeder feeds 1 cube of freeze dried Primal in the morning... I think Primal is a really good food. It seems to be very highly recommended, and there is a local store that sells it, so I wouldn't have to order it online. I'm pretty confident in continuing the Primal. She also free feeds Eukanuba. I don't know much about this food. My Gigi had liver shunt, so she ate Royal Canin Hepatic food for over 10 years. Why would you feed a raw diet AND a food like Eukanuba? The Eukanuba isn't grain free. Why wouldn't you just feed Primal? What do you feed your babies? |
When bringing a new baby home it is best to keep the puppy on what the breeder was feeding them to avoid any stomach issues. The puppy is going through many many new adjustments, momma and litter mates are gone, new human, new home, new schedule, new smells, sounds, sights, kinda overwhelming for a wee lil bit baby, don't add to it by changing the food. Wait a few months until the puppy has fully adjusted to it's new life if you want to change food. You really should ask the breeder the question you are asking this forum, only the breeder can answer the "why". And, grain free food is no longer advised to feed, some grain free foods have been causing serious health issues like heart attacks. There is nothing wrong with grains in food. I do not have a baby, my boy is older but we do have a few members that just got puppies, hopefully they will chime in with what they are feeding them. |
It actually not all that safe to feed puppies raw because there systems are just not prepared for that not that I’m a fan of feeding any dog raw. Grain free is not necessary and a lot of the grain free foods are high in peas, lentils and potatoes which is being linked to eat disease in dogs. I personally am a huge fan of Royal Canin lots of science behind their food and they are a very trustworthy company. |

As others have said, you should ask the breeder about her reasoning. However, my guess is that one reason she recommends the Eukanuba is that you shouldn’t feed a very small puppy only a few times a day (which could lead to a dangerous hypoglycemia attack) nor should you leave raw food out for free feeding (as it could quickly go bad and cause illness). If I remember correctly, your Milo will be quite small (two pounds or so?) when he comes home, so he should have kibble available to free feed whenever he’s hungry. I can’t comment on raw food, since I’ve never used it, so be sure to research possible ill effects on puppies before you make a final decision. And, as was mentioned, be extra cautious about grain free diets; vets still learning of and researching the ill effects of grain free diets on some dogs. |

I'm just not familiar with Eukanuba... I am familiar with Royal Canin, and Science Diet and Pro Plan. I am a firm believer that RC kept my Gigi alive for many many years! I do intend to speak to my vet about it. |

I have had really good results with Royal Canin. My Gigi ate their hepatic formula for over 10 years. I'm certainly not opposed to their food! |

I mentioned above that I was a little surprised by what the breeder was feeding. She explained why she fed the raw, then commented about feeding grain free... then said she free feeds Eukanuba, which isn't grain free. so I was confused, it didn't make sense to me. My pups have always eaten Royal Canin, Science Diet or Pro Plan (way back in the day... ) I will ask my vet about it for sure. |
