Old Guy with new young Yorkie 1 Attachment(s) Hello folks. I'm and old guy who is new here and have just adopted a 9-month old Yorkie named Rocky. We live in Nevada. I have been learning much on this board and am reading about all things Yorkie. I still have much to learn. Rocky is a good boy and sleeps through the night. He bathrooms outside when I follow a reasonable schedule. He also barks very little but when he does he sounds like a much bigger dog. I am long retired and am here for Rocky all the time. I had him neutered and groomed. The vet also removed a few baby teeth that hadn't been pushed out by his adult teeth. I brought him up to date on his vaccinations and the vet says he is a healthy dog. I am feeding him Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream Puppy food and his treats are Stella & Chewy's Freeze Chicken Dried Lil' Bites. Rocky is getting plenty of exercise and has a lot of room here to run and play. I will appreciate any and all advice that you kind folks may offer. |
Hi and welcome to YorkieTalk! Congratulations on your new puppy! Sounds like you’re doing good getting him caught up on everything and neutered and all that stuff. Only thing I would be concerned about I’m not familiar with taste of the wild but I would not feed him a grain free diet. There are heart problems that can develop from those diets so I would stay away from that but other than that sounds like you got it covered. Good luck and have fun and do keep in touch. Oh and by the way what a gorgeous pup! |
Hello and welcome! He is a cutie! Taste of the wild is on the list of foods the FDA put out linked to heart disease so I would look for something non grain free and that isn't high in lentils, potato and legumes. |
I appreciate your replies. Taste of the wild is all he has ever eaten according to the person giving him up for adoption. I will be switching him over (little by little) to adult dog food over the next couple of months. In searching the posts concerning dog food on this board I find a wide range of opinions. Is there a food that folks kind of agree about for Yorkies? I'm not afraid to buy premium brands. |
Welcome to YT OMGoodness, that face, what a lil sweetie he is. Rocky has found himself a good daddy. Sounds like you did all the right things for this little boy. Have fun, these puppy days go by so fast. Any particular questions you had in mind? |

I see that Royal Canin makes a dog food specific to Yorkshire Terriers. It is sold at PETCO. Would that be a good choice. I'm so very new to this and want to do the right thing. |
Rocky is adorable! Welcome to YorkieTalk, and keep us abreast of his antics as he settles into his new home...sounds like a match made in Heaven. Enjoy! :yorkietal |

Rocky is adorable. The two of you will have a great time together. Yorkies are so cute and loving. Royal Canin for Yorkies is a good choice and lots of Yorkie parents on YT swear by it. Happy days ahead for you and Rocky. :):) |

I bought a bag of Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier dog food and put a few pieces mixed in with his usual breakfast. I also gave him a few pieces (4) as treats. As treats he liked the Royal Canin much better than the Taste of the Wild. In the past I would offer him a piece of Taste of the Wild as a treat and he would turn his nose up at it. Thanks for the advice of getting Rocky off the grain free food. I want to keep him healthy and happy. I think he will keep me healthy and happy too. He sure does keep me busy which is good for an old guy. |
Congratulations and welcome to the club! :) |

He will definitely keep you healthy and happy as well. I love going on long walks with Duchess. Sometimes we go on 5 mile hikes and I can't keep up with her. She also keeps me laughing and smiling all the time. |
