Another thing to worry about... Wouldn't you know it...a large, red shouldered hawk has built a nest in the tree overlooking our screened lanai. It has its beady eyes trained on both boys every time they go outside for fresh air! |
Hawks are mean! Just keep your babies close and your eyes open. |
Those ugly things are up to no good. I saw something on Facebook saying they ere going to be worse thins year but I forgot why. Mine are 14 pounds and up so generally to big to pick up and my fence is to small for them to have room to swoop in and out but I still worry about it. We have several eagles near us too. My grandmother taught them that if she yells big birds that they all come running inside. |

Unfortunately, the hawks are protected in Florida..including their nests. The only good thing is that we have a pool screen over the entire lanai. I still will not let them go outside without being there. We have a bald eagle's nest less than a mile away, and turkey buzzards frequently circle above the lanai when we are outside and they spot the boys. That is not even considering the alligators...Florida is not exactly a small dog friendly place! |
Pennsylvania also has hawk protection law, but I didn't know their nests fall under that law. I think most states have laws to protect Hawks. I guess we all have to learn how to live safely among wild predators and small pets. |

We still have our place in SD out on the NW Prairie. HAWKS AND EAGLES all year, thick, many, lots, and of course Protected. Even their danged FEATHERS are protected. <rolls eyes> (You know birds molt, that is SHED, feathers, right????) God watched out for us with the English Shepherd Guardian Angle we had. Yes. She honestly guarded the sky above the other animals, free range ducks, geese, guineas, and our baby goats. Our chickens were penned. We have Hawks here in Mid MO too. And Owls. But Hawks, and Eagles.....could CERTAINLY come off the protected lists now! |
