two Yorkies? I have a 3year male yorkie and I am considering getting another. How do you think this would work out. the three year old with a pup and should it be a male or female pup. no breeding involved |

There are many threads on this site which offer valuable tips on how to introduce the new little one to your family in order to experience the least disruption/possible conflict for your three-year-old. I would suggest that you check them out...BTW, welcome to YT! :) |
It really all depends on the dog. Dogs in general are pack animals so they normally enjoy another. There are exceptions to that rule. Does he like other dogs? Is he neutered? My oldest was an only dog for like 8 years and now has a sister and 2 brothers. She did pretty well adjusting but she’s also a very chill dog. My others all did well when adding each other to the pack. You also have to think about the money aspect too. Double the grooming, double the shots, double the flea and tick meds and double the heartworm meds and so on. |
Welcome to YT. I had a pack of 3 females all 3 years apart, also all now passed. I did not introduce the older one / ones to a new baby. I just bought the new one home and set her down. The older ones were scared of her because puppies do not smell like dogs because they are babies. Because puppies have so much energy and are nippy my girls stayed on the sofa where nippy puppy could not get at them. It took 6 to 8 weeks before the older ones stay full time on the floor with the wild child, they did become BFF. As long as your male is neutered you can get another male but, he must get neutered when the vet advises. Intact males will fight for dominantacy, they can seriously injure each other if left intact. If you get a female she must be spayed to avoid mammary tumors and Pyometra which can be fatal. Keeping an intact male and a un-spayed female there will be an unplanned for pregnancy, do not think when a female comes into season you can keep them apart, spay and neuter for healthy and longer life. |

My male was 5 years old when I introduced an old rescued female Yorkie to our home. She settled in straight away and ignored the fact that Jake always tried to get away from her company. Jake eventually settled down and accepted Lucy. They played a lot together and enjoyed each other's company. Lucy always ran to Jake's rescue when one of my cats would put him in a corner. She would try to attack the cat, I would have to separate them! Sadly she passed away a year ago this month. She was heaven on earth! |

Jackson was around... 6 yrs old when we added Lola, the cockapoo puppy, to our household. They get along famously and are BFF's. She was supposed to be my parents dog but alas kinda became mine. I will say I really miss having 1 dog for a few reasons - costs... small dogs often require dentals, which can add up every year or so quite a bit, food, treats, etc, double. Also, it was soo much easier traveling with one. It is not horrible doing things with 2 but it's also not as "easy". And I enjoy bringing my dogs everywhere I can and doing errands, shopping, etc, they both behave well but there are a few things I'd like to work on- they tend to want to walk in opposite directions etc sooo lol. Just less to juggle!! But at home they have each other all day while I work, they play in the evenings, etc. Depends on your lifestyle tbh. |
