Dog Names I have to tell you all, that now and again I grin, when I read your dog names. A Dog's name is so important......How did you come up with all the CUTE names you all have decided on to Name Your Tiny Dogs???? Katy? When I was a little kid, like really young, my dad brought home a Beagle Puppy hidden in his shirt. I got to name him. I did not know what to call him so my Dad asked, "How does he make you feel?", I said, "Happy." Happy lived a long HAPPY life. My Dad was a Hunter and Happy loved nothing more than loading up to go Hunt Rabbits! Later in life I had a beautiful Labrador Retriever. I got her just before Christmas one year. I had a Trick Troupe at the time called, Gospel Dogs, and they all had Christian names. I named her Marna's Merry Mary. Mary, as it turned out, is 'That One Dog'......that is, she was 'the dog'. She was just so wonderful and easy to train, and I swear, she could read my mind. After I lost Mary I had a Mixed Breed and named him, Mr. Bo Jangles, because Mary, 'up and died, and after 20 years he still grieves'. <clears lump in throat, because she really was THE DOG and I still do tear up> After Mary first died I got my little Cocker, and named her Joy Marie. Kinda after Happy and Mary. Katy, was always slated to be called Jolly. But we live RIGHT on the KATY Trail. Our front yard starts at the KATY and our driveway crosses it. We ride bikes a lot. A LOT. Last year we rode 2252.2 miles last years. Yes. We keep tract. When I decided I DID want another little dog <read baby to spoil> I wanted one to fit in a basket on my bicycle and not be too heavy. I researched a few breeds.....Yorkie fit all tickets AND I love the LOOK. I studied the Standard for the Breed so that I would know what I was looking for..... And so.....the Name Katy.....just worked for her! |
Oh, and...... Since it was, Merry Mary. Then Joy Marie. It was going to be......Jolly Maria......yes, you can almost sing that Hymn right? Ha Ha <Ave Maria> Yes......one day..... |
My husband named our parti yorkie Tyrone, after Tyrone Power. He was scruffy, and looked like a little pirate to Jim. When he started to outgrow his projected weight (he is now just shy of ten pounds), he agreed that we could get him a little brother. I still swear that Tyrone felt that he had to live up to his name, and therefore is a strapping, muscular boy. I named Gus, and listed his AKC name as "Mommy's Sweet Baby Gus". His name suits him well...he is a six pound, spoiled little cuddle bug! :D |
Jazzy Blu... love musical names. |
Very interesting story. My Yorkie's name is Lilu. I just like the sound of that name, so I named my sweety that way) |
1 Attachment(s) My now passed girl Matese went months before I named her. My 3 before her were mischief makers but Matese went beyond that. I always said, if Matese was my first yorkie, she would have been my last yorkie. One night watching the news they mentioned the artist Matisse, referred to his paintings as "one of a kind" well, that's what this puppy was one of a kind so I changed the spelling and that is how she got her name. As an adult she weighed in at 17 Lbs, no fat or muscle, she had a long sleek body. I miss that girl so much, she was with me for 17 years. Cody was a "quick pick" lol a unplanned gift to me from my vet 6 weeks after losing my beloved Matese. He was a surrendered boy, because of his huge ears he reminded my vet of Matese because she had huge ears lol. I didn't want to leave my vets office with the name he had, I had to think on the fly and Cody popped into my head. My kiddo |
2 Attachment(s) I generally never pick a name until I have spent time with the pup. Callie (Princess California/ Callie Mae) With Callie I had been on the floor with her for hours and my mom told me I needed to name her. I picked Callie Mae. For her registration with the non reputable ACA I needed a name Callie could stand for so I went with California and her papers say Princess California. Callie just came to me. Joey (Joseph James) When I got him at 9 weeks the 2nd people who had him were calling him Ziggy but I prefer more human names. He was so tiny and Joey popped in my head. My dad hated it but I loved it and chose it to stand for Joseph. James is the name of my grandfather who passed away the year before I got Joey and knowing I probably can’t have kids I decided to use it. He has no papers but my mom made him a little birth certificate. Penny (Princess Penelope/ Penelope Ann) When I rescued Penny she was 8 months old. I picked her up about an hour away from my house so I help her and me and my mom would say names to see if she responded to them starting at A names. Her name given by the previous owners was Paris and she didn’t react at all to it. I originally wanted to name her Amory after the extremely small Mississippi town my grandmother grew up in that I loved but my mom shot me down. So we got to the P names and my mom says Penny and her ears perked up and she looked at my mom and we decided she had picked her name to be Penny. I was never thrilled with the name Penelope but I caved. Ann just kinda seemed to go with it. She has non reputable ACA papers too and I went with Princess Penelope. Ollie (Oliver Riley) This was the only one I sorta picked a name ahead of time. I knew what he looked like. The night before we went to get him I couldn’t sleep. So I went through some lists of names and made a list of ones I liked. Oliver and Riley being two of my favorites but I hadn’t fully settled on them yet. We got him and a few hours later I decided it was going to either be Riley Oliver or Oliver Riley. Obviously I decided Oliver Riley. Then I chose that he would be called Ollie. He is the only one with AKC papers and is Oliver Riley on them. He is a chocolate yorkie and my dad was pushing names that related to chocolate and I was just like no. When he gives kisses though I do say they a chocolate kisses lol. |

Katy's Sire's name is Gus....and BOY does it fit him. I would have to look at her papers to get the full name..... I LOVE the name Gus for a Terrier! It just works so well! One thing about Katy! I FELL IN LOVE WITH HER PARENTS before even looking at her. The Breeder met me at the door with a girl puppy in each hand. I did not hold one until I saw the parents. KATY'S MOTHER! OH! OH! I fell Head Over Heals in love with her! I had told the Breeder; texting; If the parents have Straight (that is correctly built) legs, Good teeth, I am in! Ha Ha I HONESTLY could have come home with either parent and been thrilled. Now? I hope that Katy looks like her Mama....who at 7 pounds was built so correctly, she looked sooooooo tiny! Her name is Zelda......all she needed was a CAPE! And you could have guessed her name. Soooooooo! Sooooooo! Cute. Soooooo! Soooooo! Correctly built. We chose the puppy that was the most like her dam. |
I love this thread, smiling as I read all the posts! Many of my dogs had/have middle names too. Katy, however, does not. Just 'Katy Kazmaier'. |

I don't remember how i came up with his name, but I wanted something short and crisp sounding. I have a friend here whose dog named James, and we always joke that among popular dog names in Turkey that translates to "bubble", "honey", "cinnamon", "olive" etc, our Mike and James sure sound like our human sons when we tell strangers about them for the first time :) |
