Possible issues with rice in pet food Looks like we have something else to be concerned about with pet food. https://truthaboutpetfood.com/new-st...enic-exposure/ |
I don't have an opinion on that, but Jax does terrible on rice. Anytime in the past when I have given him chicken and rice, the rice just goes right through him. I don't think it helps sooth the stomach as much as some would say. I find cod and potato to be a better solution for a lot of dogs. |
What about a dog food with chicken and oatmeal? |

My now passed girls were picky eaters, Cody is not and I am blessed. He will eat anything I give him. All these findings in dog foods is madding. Instead of getting better, seems their food is getting worse, more reading labels for ingredients and where on the list they are placed. Feeding dogs gets more complicated. Thank you Taylor for this new information. |

I just looked at Cody's new food, the 2nd ingredient is brown rice, so am I to change to another food? He was eating Wellness Core Grain Free for 4 1/2 years, he has / had allergies from the day I adopted him. He was on Apoquel until Cytopoint came out then went for shots every 4 to 6 weeks. Both meds cut down the amount of scratching but never stopped it. Then March 2019 he stopped scratching just like that, so the Cytopoint shots stopped. By Jan. 6 he was fully transitioned to the new food and the scratching started on Jan. 6, so this is food related and environmental too I am sure. What I have found since taking him off grain free he doesn't STINK anymore, yes STINK, he would go to the groomer and the next day he STINKS, I bathe him and the next day he stinks. Changing him to regular dog food no more STINK but now scratching. I guess I have to start the food game all over again looking for rice to be lower on the ingredient list , my problem is in the size of the kibble. Most I have tried the size is for a 3 LB dog, to small for Cody to chew, the new food kibble size is perfect. |

I kinda thought that it may be coming from his pores because every time he would pee or poop I would wipe his wee-wee, butt and pads with pampers unscented baby wipes in case he had stepped his pee, that didn't help. He STUNK. The food he is now eating comes in two other types, the store is close to my groomer, he gets groomed tomorrow, I'm going to that store to see if they sell the other two in 5 Lb bags I am going to see if the rice in those is lower on the list, if it isn't maybe the store owner knows of a brand with larger kibbles, I am bringing some kibble with me to show him the size. My groomer buys big bags because she has several mini poodles. The one I am feeding him I bought from Chewy, they didn't have the other 2 in smaller bags, so I will see if this store carries the other two in small bags. I don't want to buy a large bag it will get stale before it's finished. That's great Callie is off the Cytopoint, I am hoping Cody will not have to go back to getting shots. |
This is saddening. I was just looking at a new food last week thinking to add it to rotation but it has rice as a second ingredient ((( I think unless presented with extreme food sensitivities, health conditions and such, it's good to rotate foods and brands.. Seems like there's something wrong with almost everything on the market. At least by rotation we can minimise bad effects on health to some degree. |

I have to be honest in saying this is just the start I知 not sure how much research has been done. It may end up not being that big a deal who knows. There is Brewers rice in what I am feeding and for now I知 not changing. My dogs are doing amazing on what they are eating. I知 going to just keep an eye on this and how my pups are doing. |
When I went into this store to check on the other type of this dog food, there was a man listening to me telling the owner about the rise and arsenic and if rice was the 2nd ingredient and blah blah blah, the man came over to me, he told me he was a food nutritionist and gave me a list of his credentials, it was as long as my arm lol. We talked about this rice issue and about the grain free food and about the company that makes the food Cody is now eating. He assured me there was no risk in feeding my dog with rice as the 2nd ingredient. I am emailing my vet the article from that link and asking if its safe to continue feeding him this food. I bought a bag of Salmon hoping it will stop Cody from scratching, I am going to start him on it tomorrow. As far as this man I spoke with lol, like ppl on the internet they can say they are a Anthropologist lol, how would I know. I will follow what my vet advises. I don't change foods if Cody likes what he's eating. I had 3 girls that drove me crazy trying to find a food all 3 would eat. As long as he eats it I will buy it. I had started him on Natural Balance limited ingredients, he ate that for 1 1/2 years then just stopped, I tried various types rabbit, venison, bison, he wouldn't eat it. When I bought the Wellness Core grain free he loved it and he's been on that for 4 1/2 years. He gets no table food what so ever. Once every 2 weeks I'll boil a chicken cutlet and give him that in a separate bowl as a treat. Other then that he eats the dry food. I don't need a picky eater because I feel he needs a change. |
