Dog flu Has any one heard anything about the dog flu lately? The last two years I got my pups the vaccine for it but I’m not hearing much about it and wondering if it is worth it? |
2017 I saw the flu strain H3N8 and H3N2 had worked its way into Pa. I asked my vet should we do the vaccine, she told me she has heard no cases of it in our county so for now NO. 2018 again I asked, I was told NO. My last visit to the vet was Dec. 22, 2019, ask about it again, again my vet told me no. She said if she starts treating any dogs for this flu she would sending letters out to get your dogs in for the vaccine. Like you say, you go to a lot of dog venues where ppl from different parts of the country also go to. With Callie's low immune system I would not take the chance. |

If you don't have any dog expos coming up finish the antibiotics, wait a couple of weeks then take her in for the shot. |

I guess you have to use your best judgement then. I'll do some research to see if the H3N8 and H3N2 is airborne. |
How is canine influenza virus spread? Almost all dogs are susceptible to canine flu infection, and virus infection tends to spread among dogs housed in kennels and shelters. Canine flu is thought to spread mainly among dogs through respiratory droplets produced during coughing and sneezing from infected dogs, or through contact with contaminated surfaces. Therefore, dog owners whose dogs are coughing or showing other signs of respiratory disease should not expose their dog to other dogs or to cats. Clothing, equipment, surfaces, and hands should be cleaned and disinfected after exposure to dogs showing signs of respiratory disease. |
