Coat Questions When you get a yorkie puppy, I know the coat it has at that time is only temporary. So how old is the puppy when its coat begins to change from "puppy hair" to its adult silky hair. Are all puppys about the same color? If so, is there anyway you can tell what color the puppy will mature to be? And Finally, Is there anything I can look for when picking out a puppy that would be a sign that it will have pretty silky hair when it matures? I know this is alot of questions but im just trying to do my research lol :) :) |

The best way to determine the quality of coat and color is to look at the parents and possibly the grandparents. Coats are hereditary. |
My puppy's hair was the "hair from hell," and I cut it off as quickly as possible. It was thin, oily, seemed almost glued together - and I couldn't get a comb through it. By the time he was three months old - all of his puppy hair had grown out and had been cut off and a beautiful new coat of silver/tan hair replaced it. He has a short cut now. But his new hair is straight/wavy, thicker, not oily, easy to comb, and never matts. His hair grows fast and his new hair is close to an inch long now. He looks good! I do know that my puppy's mother was blonde and his father was silver. Carol Jean PS: When I got my pup at 8 weeks - his roots were already silver - the new color that was coming in. So - keep an eye on his hair roots and you'll probably be able to see any new colors that are coming through. |
I agree with snow-wa! Look at the parents, it will be your best guess. Mine had four pups 8 month ago. The boys are still black, the girls 'broke blue' at around 2 months (gray coming into hair). Teddy is just now starting to get a lot of grey undercoat, Quattro is still very black. All my pups have a silky coat (although when it is mixed it seems to get more matty.) I dont think you can tell for sure until the black is gone  |
