Top knot Curious as to others protocol on changing out their yorkies top knot. Everyday, every other day, etc... I always have issues with the hair knotting very quickly, I think if I did it everyday I can minimize it or I am doing something incorrectly when tying it. Cheers |

1 Attachment(s) My kiddos have short hair now, so no top knots for us. When they were on the show circuit it was every day and on show days multiple times. Here's a pic of Lacie. |
In the house I use claws or barrettes, when we go out I use latex rubber bands. To answer your question, regardless of what I use, I brush and comb his hair every morning making sure all little knots are out, otherwise it gets matted whether it's a claw, barrette or latex band. |
Thanks for posting members. So it looks like I'm not alone with the knotting and my best bet is to address it on a daily basis. I wish we could use something simple like a claw or barrette but emmi would have those out before she hit the floor running. She is rough and tumble right now, hope she mellows as time goes along. Always into something. Only 10 months and it seems as though she has been here foreverrrrrr. Right now we use what I think are the latex bands. They are about a half inch round and they have a really good stretch to them. Very thin also. Lacie is beautiful chattiesmom!!!! Emmi's coat is slowly changing from the puppy coat and sooo thick compared to prior yorkie. She is definitively not show material but I think her coat is going to be beautiful as time goes along. She is a chocolate but some of her colors/markings are really nice. The misses says I have an obsession with hair because I like to keep it long, lol. Cheers and thanks |
I wish Gidget would let me put her in a top knot but she REFUSES. I tried this from day one and she's not gotten any better about having anything put in her hair. Oh, well...… |
Thank you for this information. Katy is my first Yorkie. I have now started redoing her Top Knot Daily when I do her daily grooming. I have also found, and Thank You for this too, that working with that Top Knot each day is also a VERY good Training Section for.....No, <laughs and winks> and Hold. Actually, she really is getting so much better at those. Can I ask????? How often do each of you, really, bathe your Yokies? The Yorkie Books I have read said/say every 3 weeks, I think Katy could use this more often. |

Katy hated sitting for Top Knots too, as well as Nail Trimming, too. She IS getting better. I just look at both as Training. The other day when I did her nails, she may have wetted MY pants a little, but settled down after a few minutes and before the 'ordeal' was over. I do the front feet, then later in the day, do the back feet. Two training sections, not as stressful for puppy all at once. |

OH MY GOODNESS! Lovely, Lovely Dog! Can you tell me???? Did, when on the Show Circuit, did you KEEP her hair in rollers? When you put a coat on her in Winter, did she have her hair rolled under the coat? |

I have attached pictures of the tops and sides of what the claw looks like, they come in all sizes. I started with the wee little one while Cody's hair was growing in, the larger one is what we use in the house. If you use this on Katy you have to watch she doesn't get it out of her hair and chew it, it's really tiny. I don't use the tiny ones anymore. Cody's hair has grown in a longggg time ago. You can also buy scissors to cut those latex bands, I attached photos of it, I bought mine from one of YT members mimimomo her web-site is www.toplinepet.com |

Ok, yeah. I see now. I just did not know what these were called. I use these for Barbie as well as other Dolls; I have a Youtube Channel, Doll Restoration, called Dolls Rescued. I do a monthly Craft Video, showing how to 'recycle used dolls', and make things for them, with some kids, one is my Granddaughter that lives across the State from us.....it is a way to send her stuff and keep in touch with her. As well as teaching her to hand sew and other crafting.....this coming video, I am sending some of these and little curlers, teaching them to do a do for Barbie. <grins and winks> I have tried these Claws in Katy's hair, as well as barrettes, but at this point she scratches those out. I figure get her used to the 'rubber bands' and used the Top Knot, then change to these sorts of items. THANK YOU for taking the time to show photos of what the Claw is. I really appreciate the help in learning how to do all this, and care for, my Tiny Dog. |
Your site sounds interesting! Anyway, for Dixie, I use rubber coated rubber bands and fix each day. For dress she gets a bow. |

Hey, that's what YT is all about, trying to help others, we all learn from each other ;) |

Since we lived in the south with fairly mild winters no coats were necessary, however she has always slept under the covers. I believe that the biggest factors in the being able to grow and maintain the long luxurious coat are genetics and good nutrition plus using good quality grooming products. |

WOW! You really ARE my Yorkie Hero! Long Hair, Show Circuit, and THE BARN! I love when Conformational Show Dogs ARE ALLOWED TO BE DOGS! Congrats on having a Little Champion! THAT TAKES SO MUCH TO ACHIEVE! We too have a Barn....with animals. Less now that we moved to MO.....but all the same. Barn and what the horses leave behind. And Barn Cats with what they 'hide'. <winks> Katy however, at this age, does not go outdoors off leash. With the type of Wildlife here in Farm Land, she might never get to be loose outdoors.....shall see. It's so nice to read your note! Thanks for taking the time to write. I sure would LOVE for Katy to have that long, lovely, hair/coat....but still be a dog......They are, after all, Terriers! And Katy! She loves a Mole Hill! |
I additionally experienced a couple of sorts of elastics until found the one that works best for his hair...cooking games |

I redo Deuce's topknot as needed which may mean at least once a day or can be 3 or 4 times a day depending on how hard he is playing. I cut out the bands each time so I don't tear up his hair. I get the little bands from TopLine pet. I say bands because I fix his topknot in two ponies and band it together. His hair on his head is very dense. I feel the front does not pull his eyes and it stays in much better. As far as a bath goes every three weeks is about right. I use the clippers on his body every six to eight weeks and scissor clip as needed. In the summer it depends on how dirty he gets and in the winter I try to bathe him on a Sunny warmer day if I have a choice. |

BAHAHAHAHHAH BAHHAHHAHAHH I get that! I have been putting a Top Knot into Katy's hair.....let's say.....often. Yesterday was the best one I had ever done. She looked sooooo cute. She was falling asleep on my lap, Top Knot looking good, she looked like an Angel.....I looked at my husband and started laughing......"Look at our Tom Boy all Dolled Up like a Fancy Little Dog!". It's clear and cold here now. But last week it was cold, windy, sleeting, with a sheet of ice under our feet....I was out with Katy on a leash to go potty. She went potty RIGHT AWAY! Good Girl! Let' go in.....she pulls back on the leash (Yes, I use a harness) ready to go see if the Moles in the Hills are active and to sniff around to see what wildlife might have come through! I LOVE THESE TOUGH LITTLE TERRIERS! Your little Duece is a DOLL! I love the photos of him in your profile photo! Thanks for the information. |
Thanks for all the TIPS! I really appreciate you guys taking the time to send them. |

I wash my Marley 9mts., every week and a half to two weeks. She gets a fresh up doggie wipe every night, because she sleeps in my bed 😊 I agree, 3-weeks between baths would be to long for me! |
