Need help with fleas! My two little girls have fleas! We recently moved to Pennsylvania from Colorado where they weren't a problem. I have been trying to go the natural route using a flea comb several times a day along with Vets Best spray. I am also vacuuming daily and washing bedding daily. I have bathed the weekly with a natural flea shampoo and they still have fleas. They have lost quite a bit of fur around their eyes. The vet wants me to go the chemical route with a chewable. I'm very nervous about it because I had a Maltese who had seizures after Frontline and was never the same after that. I'm very interested in what other yorkie owners are using. Ticks are also a concern. Any advice would be appreciated. |
There is a medicine that can kill all the fleas right away and then more then likely you will have to bomb the house or have and exterminator come in. After the fleas are already there nothing natural is going to kill them. I use nexgard for fleas and tick prevention with 4 dogs and it was used on my moms late yorkie too with no issues. Fleas really really are such a pain. |
Thank you! Thank you! I'm afraid of that. |
Welcome to YT, I live in the Poconos PA. My vet advised Simparica as a monthly treatment. I have been using it on my kid for 5 years my pup has had no reactions from it and no fleas or ticks. What you need right now is Comfortis, it's a chewable pill it starts killing fleas and eggs within 30 minutes. You can get it only from a veterinarian. I have used this several times with my now passed girl when she became infested with fleas in mid winter due to stray cats living under my deck which was my girls hunting grounds. Pennsylvania is also one of the high states for Lyme disease, here in the Pocono it's a core vaccine, you may want to check with your vet about getting the Lyme vaccine. |
If you continue to vacuum and wash bedding you should be ok. Empty the vac into a plastic bag outside your home, knot the bag and put in your trash pail. Do this every time you vacuum. Buy flea collars, cut into 3 pieces and wedge them into your sofa cushions, make sure your pups cannot get at them. I did not have to bomb or use an exterminator, vacuum, vacuum, vacuum and wash dog bedding. The Comfortis works within 30 minutes, you will have dead fleas to vacuum up. Just make sure you empty your vac outdoors in a plastic bad and knot that bag ;) |
I use Frontline Plus on Gidget. Works really well for us. Hope you solve your flea problem soon. |
Thank you! Thank you all for your suggestions. This has been a nightmare! |
