Help Newborn Kitten So yesterday a stray cat left her two small kittens in my yard. I left them alone because they were hidden in some bushes and I know that oftentimes mothers leave their kittens for sometimes hours at a time. I just took a stand back and wait approach. The mother did come back but she only took one kitten. So once again I played the waiting game because I was thinking she is going to back for the second kitten so I went to bed thinking both kittens would be okay. Well this morning it was still there. I went to the store and got some kitten replacement formula which she will not eat. We are going to the vet's this afternoon. The vet also runs a shelter but as luck would have it, I can't get their until this evening. I am hoping the shelter will take it. Anyway. I am not sure how this cat is still alive. She won't eat and I'm pretty sure it hasn't eaten in over 12 hours. Meahwhile, it's driving Duchess crazy. She keeps wanting to get to the kitten. A couple of times I let Duchess smell her and immediately Duchess went for her neck. I don't know if this kitten is bringing out Duchess mothering instincts or her hunter instincts but just to be on the safe side, the kitten is in a crate and I have actually put Duchess in the bedroom and closed the door. If not, she will work herself up into a frenzy trying to get to the kitten. My cat is completely indifferent to this kitten. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get this kitten to eat. I have kitten replacement milk and a bottle but i don't have any syringes. She will not take any milk from the bottle. Every half hour or so I have managed to get a few drops down but that's it. She won't suckle the bottle. To be honest with you, I am not sure how it's still alive. Any suggestion on how I can feed her until I can get her to the shelter? I don't plan on keeping it but I just want to make sure she's okay. Should I just let nature take over and take her back where I found her hoping the mother cat comes back and feeds her? I think the mother cat may have rejected her. The mother cat is familiar and this is her territory and I see her all the time. I don't think anything has happened to her but I have not seen her or the other kitten since yesterday. Im just not sure what to do. I don't have any experience with newborns plus given the round the clock care they need, I would not be able to take care of her because I have to work during the day. Help |
Good news. I just talk to the shelter and they are going to take the kitten. That is such a relief. |
I can't offer feeding help, just wanted to say about Dutchess, since this is a born outdoors baby Dutchess may be going after it to kill it since it has the outdoor scent. Poor little kitty, I hope it survives until you can get it to the shelter. Have you gone on FB to ask about feeding it. |
Thank GOD |
And stay away from the bushes lol. |
I kinda fear that since it appears the mother rejected it that there maybe something more wrong with the kitten. Hopefully the vet and shelter can help the little one. If the mother is feral have you thought of catching her and getting her spayed? |
The kitten did survive and is now safely at the shelter. It's a new no kill shelter but it's also a vet's office as well. They are going to get it spayed, all it's shots and should be ready for adoption in about 10 weeks after all that stuff is done if nothing is wrong with it. I also gave them a nice donation as well. WOOHOO! |

Unfortunately I live in a town full of stray cats. My neighbor has does some catch, spay, release but the number of cats in this town is getting overwhelming. Just a few weeks ago, I found a badly injured cat and of course I rushed it to the vets but they had to euthanized it. Also people in this town feed the cats. These cats are literally fat cats. I don't feed them but there is a person on my block who does. |

I got lucky with this vet\shelter. It just opened 6 months ago and is a brand new facility. They are just about full. I had called other shelters and they were all filled up. I don't know what I would of done if they wouldn't have taken him. As for him (found out it was a boy) not eating, the vet techs said that happens sometimes with kittens. She said they have to sometimes be shown how to "suck" from a bottle or a syringe. As soon as they took him, they starting working on getting him to eat. Anyway he is safe and sound Living where I live, this won't be the last time I will have to rescue a kitten. So far in the 3 years I've been here, this kitten is the 3rd cat I've had to help. One died (about 4 weeks old) and the other had to be put to sleep because his injuries were to extensive. I've also picked up a dead kitten out of my driveway (and no it wasn't me that killed it). Oh well.....such is life. |

In talking to my neighbor, he's been doing it for awhile but hasn't done it lately. We have those programs but we have to do the trapping ourselves. Maybe I'll talk to my neighbor and see if he can start doing it again because our other neighbor keeps feeding the cats and the number of cats that are coming for food is growing. |

I just got some info on TNR programs in my area (rural area....so only found 1 in the area). All I would need is a 50.00 refundable deposit for the trap. If I return the trap within 7 days, I get my money back. Once I've trap a cat, it would only cost 35.00 to spay or neuter, a rabies vaccination and a ear tipping. Then I would just have to go pick him up. With the number of cats, that I see, maybe my neighbors would be willing to chip in to help get them spayed or neutered. I've counted at least 6 cats that visit periodically, depending on food. |

In our country they offer traps, free spay and you then return them to where they were caught. Great idea!!!!!! |
