Probiotic Suggestion Hi All, Does anyone use a probiotic with their dogs to help with digestive issues. I use the Purina FortiFlora only when they have loose stool and also use pumpkin mixed in. Unfortunately, the canned pumpkin is goes to waste because I do not need the whole can within a day or two they are fine again. However, my vet suggested putting Bella and Thumper on a daily probiotic basis as it has a lot of great qualities. The issue is that a 30 packet is almost $30 on chewy and amazon so doubling that would be $60 a month. I am hoping to find something similar that is more economical. The FortiFlora has great flavoring and they love it sprinkled on their food or even in their water. Would love other suggestions for a daily probiotic. Thumper has Cushing's and Kidney Disease so I also need to be careful what I give him. I am not even sure what I am looking for when looking for a different probiotic. |
Bumping, cause I don't have suggestions. We use FortiFlora with great success as well when necessary, and it's really costly :( For the pumpkin can you freeze the leftovers in a silicone ice mold? once frozen you can store it in a freezer bag and take out little portions when needed. I make pumpkin puree for pies and freeze it in plastic bags, it can stay frozen this way for up to 6 months. |
We use the fortaflora also but I split 2 packets between the 4. Joey doesn’t really like it though so I have been kinda searching around for a chewable. I know Petsmart has chewable ones but don’t know how great they are. |
Tyrone had frequent bouts of colitis when he was younger. Every road trip to family would spur severe attacks, and a vet visit with meds on each end of the trip. Stress (workers in the home, etc.) would frequently lead to an attack. We have had him on VetriScience Laboratories Probiotic Everyday for Dogs, Digestive Health Supplement (on Amazon) for nearly one year, and he has not had an attack! We do know the signs to watch for, and travel with his Nutramax Proviable Kit for Cats and Small Dogs by Nutramax Laboratories (also on Amazon). One or two days of this paste will knock back an attack if treated at the time of his first loose stool. Our vet approves of this approach, and Tyrone has gone from serious bouts of colitis several times a year, to being attack-free for over one year! |
I spoke to my vet today who was wonderful and did some time prior to calling me back to research any other probiotics. She said FortiFlora is the best out there in her opinion. She understands how expensive it can be though. She suggested another pill form (can't remember name) but did stress she felt FortiFlora was of a higher quality. I asked if I can give it to them every other day to help with the cost and she said that should not be a problem since this is just for immune support and not actually for treating a specific issue. I also called Purina to confirm that the product on Amazon is from them and they did. I have an amazon card that allows me to make 66 months installments interest free so that also helps with the cost. My dogs love the taste. I can put it in food or water and they lick it up. |
I am so glad that you found an answer that will work for you. Best wishes, and hope that Bella and Thumper are soon feeling well and comfortable! |
