Heartworm and Flea Medication I recently read an article that said giving both Heartworm and Fleam medication like Simparica and Sentinel was overkill. (Full disclosure this was from a holistic vet) I looked into it and at Thumper's annual vet appointment ask him why the two medications since they seem to work the same. He explained that the Sentinel does help with fleas it does not prevent ticks or kill adult fleas so for the time being both need to be given as a combo. I did ask him if there will ever be a medication that combines both Heartworm, flea and tick and he said they are working on it but it will take time to get through the FDA as it needs to 100% effective before approving it. He said just using a Heartworm vs. a flea/tick is not 100% effective so the combination is better. |
There is one that is a combo of all 3 but it’s been extremely dangerous and deadly and it is Trifexis. I also think revolution covers all 3 but it’s a topical. I give heartguard and nexguard. I could not get Callie to take sentinel for some reason. Callie used to be very sensitive with topicals so I’m glad they came out with a chew. |

I have also heard about Trifexis not being good one my vet does not recommend it. His preference is Sentinel or Sentinel Spectrum and Simparica. Both mine will take it with no issues. |

My vet recommends Interceptor chewable and Simparica which I stop using when temps stay below 50 usually Nov, is the last month he gets the Simparica. |
We use Nexgard Spectra chews and it covers all three. He used to take Heartgard and Bravecto but was recently diagnosed with IBD so he had to come off of Heartgard because of potential protein allergies and the Spectra is safe for dogs with allergies. About NexGard Spectra | NexGard Spectra |
I do both Heartworm and flea year round as suggested by my vet. I think its more a cautious thing as he has had people only do one or the other in certain months and than forget and issues a rise. My vet mentioned Nexguard Spectra but said it does not help with flea eggs (only adult fleas already present) tape worms. But it does seem to cover more than the Simparica so something to think about and ask my vet when I am need for a refill medication. Thanks for mentioning it |
I do Heartguard and Nexguard. What I love is that my dogs think it is a treat and the take them both with no fuss at all. I give them on the first and second days of the month, so if there are side effects, I know which pill caused them. |

I didn't even realize it wasn't available in the US! I'm in Canada and had never heard of it before either but our vet put him on it in June. |
Is anyone using Interceptor Plus for heartworm prevention? I have only used Heartgard for my doggies, but my vet sent some home with me yesterday. Thought I should check it out. |

Thanks for your response, I'm glad there are not negative reviews. My poor little Karlee just had a dental cleaning, and they pulled all but 4 teeth. Several of her teeth were loose when they started scraping, and a few had already fallen out. They really got bad quick over the last year. She is healing fine and eats softer food, so it will be ok. |
I received an email notice from my vet’s office this morning about heartworm/flea medications. It says the manufacturer of Interceptor is phasing it out of production, and their office is substituting Simparica Trio for patients on Interceptor. I recall there was a thread here a month or two ago, with concerns about Simparica Trio because it was so recently approved so hadn’t been widely used yet. Just wondering: have those of you with smaller yorkies had success/problems with heartworm/flea meds? I’m always leery of giving meds that are for a dog “up to 25 pounds” to a four pound dog. It seems to be pushing the limits of safety for a very small animal. |
