URGENT 3-5 hours for dental extraction on 2lb yorkie I dropped my baby off for dental surgery today at UC DAVIS (one of the best in the world) although I trust their experience I am worried. We were told a dental procedure for 2 extractions couldnlast as long as 3-5 HOURS! It seems quite a long time for a 2.9 lb baby to be under. I’m not an expert so I don’t know and I could be wrong. Does this sound correct? He will have a dedicated board certified anesthetist monitoring him, as well as an IV, a heated water bag/pad under him and also pre-op bloodwork and possible heart workup. I am a mess and beyond worried. I need my baby to come home tomorrow and I want to make sure I am doing what is best for him. Its taking everything I have within me to not drive back and pick him up. |
Thinking of you, it such a stressful ordeal, getting a dental . |

I’m hoping it’s shorter than quoted as she stated it definitely can be a shorter length of time. Thank you for replying. Im still so anxious. I think everyone probably is when their babies get under anesthesia |
My thoughts are with you, and your little one. It sounds like he is in excellent shape, and you are doing what is best for him...but it is so stressful to have to our babies have to be under anesthesia. Please keep us updated! |
No is shouldn’t take that long. Are you sure that’s not how long they want to wait after anesthesia to give him back? You shouldn’t have to leave him over night either that seems a bit much. |

Could it be that they are just padding how long it will take? I know when I am working on someone's computer (I am in IT), I always exaggerate how long something should take to manage expectations. Something that should only take 10 minutes has sometimes taken a few hours to resolve so I always pad how long something might take to do. |
Any up date yet. |

I am beyond thankful for the team at U.C Davis. They are AMAZING! They had a board certified vterinary dentist as well as a board certified anesthesiologist that were both dedicated to my baby. In recovery (which is located next to their ER) they have 1 dedicated person to watch over the babies recovering. This person checks on them every 5-10 minutes to be sure they are recovering well. The facility is AMAZING and I see why it’s one of the best in the world. The price was well over what I would have paid in a local vet bt it was WORTH EVERY CENT. Just knowing my baby was being taken care of in the BEST POSSIBLE FACILITY gave me lots of hope for the best possible outcome. Ziggie is HOME NOW and doing so well 💗 |
Great news! |
Fantastic, these tiny ones do cause worry issues when it comes to them going under anesthesia, but in matters of maintaining teeth we really don't have a choice. Although U.C Davis was more costly you had trust and confidence in them and that's 1/2 the battle, trusting the vet. So happy Ziggie id home and doing well. |
