Almost Housebroken But!!!
 

My little Hope is 4.5 months old, and I know it is too much to expect her to be completely housebroken. The thing is, she knows what she is supposed to do, and occasionally does it. I take her out regularly regardless! Yesterday I randomly took her out and she went. I have been giving her a little freedom when she has gone potty outside. Yesterday within 30 minutes she urinated on an expensive rug. I diligently cleaned that. A bit later I walked into my great room and she was waiting at my the backdoor to go out again; did all necessities! I was so surprised. One day she kept running from the door around the corner to get my attention!!!

I had a bell system, but it scared her😢😢😢. I’ve tried to teach her to talk to me, which she does when I’m holding her food. I know a lot of the blame is on me for not keeping her attached to me, but she really is smart, and knows where she is to go... And, she wraps her leash around my legs three times while we are cooking 🥰🥰🥰. I think I’m the one needing some freedom......

My question: how have you taught your pups to notify you they need to go. I have had her since December 17, and until recently she has been on a leash 24/7. Perhaps I’m never going to get unwound from that thing😍😍😍.

Please get an exercise pen to put her in when you are cooking. It’s not safe for her to be at your feet. Even if we think we are being careful they can get burned by hot food or water dropping, you could trip spilling stuff or even food that’s toxic to her could fall. Mine are bigger Yorkies so I have a doggy door and that has been amazing. Joey would use the bell system.

She has a playpen between the kitchen and great room. Most of the time she is in there when I cook, or I cannot watch her. Otherwise I have her attached to a cabinet in the kitchen, but not near the cook stove. Or I am holding her leash or carrying her around the house. You are so right, as fast as she moves she can be underfoot very quickly.

But, she still gets her leash wrapped around my legs often enough during the day...

My question to the forum is, how do your pups alert you when they want to go outside?
