Congenital Heart Defect My Yorkie, Newman, is seven years old and has been in excellent health. I took him to the veterinarian because he was doing a honking/coughing noise a lot when he got really excited. The veterinarian x-rayed him to check his trachea and heart. She found that his heart is slightly enlarged and he has a mild heart murmur. She had me bring him back six week later for another x-ray of his heart. It has not changed in size. I go back in three months for another x-ray as long as everything stays the same. She seems to think that it is a congenital heart defect and that he will eventually have to go on medication. I wondered if anyone else has been through this. |

I have heard multiples times that vets have said the heart looked enlarged but really wasn’t. You might want to just go ahead and see a specialist and have them check it out. Did they diagnose the honking you went in for? It sounds like maybe it’s collapsing trachea. |
Congenital Heart Defect Lovetodream88, Thank you for the information. They did diagnose him with a slightly collapsed trachea which could explain the honking. I am using a Buddy Belt instead of a harness now and that seems to be helping. I would like to think that the enlarged heart is a mistake, but he also has a mild heart murmur. I wonder if it is possible for a Yorkie to develop a heart murmur and it not be a sign of a disorder. |

Jackson has a mild heart murmur. A vet we loved who has since moved heard it for the first time when he was 8. Said it was very faint but she could hear it. I took him to a cardiologist and did an echocardigram to get a solid answer because 1. I just wanted to know and 2. he needed a dental and I wanted to ensure he was okay for anesthesia. It is still very mild, he 10 now and has shown no signs of a murmur and needs no medication. |
Thank you! Lovetodream88 and Britster, Thank you for the information. I am going to talk to my veterinarian about the possibility of sending him for a electrocardiogram. I would like to know what is going on. I don't think that any of the veterinarians in my area have the ability to do that, so it would probably mean looking for a referral to the University of Tennessee veterinarian school. |
I'm so sorry you are facing this with your little one. For your own info and peace of mind, it might be worth a trip to a specialist. At least then you would know what to expect. |
