New Puppy Potty Training Nightmare 5 weeks ago, my family and I brought home our second puppers (we already have a three year old that we successful housebroke). This new puppy is proving impossible to train! She is 15 weeks old and 4.3 pounds. We have tried using a playpen, and she pees/poops wherever she wants in there. We have a small bed, food/water, and a pee pad in her playpen. There is no guarantee where she will go. We praise and use treats when she hits the pad. When we take her outside, she will pee 60% of the time out there, but once it's close to bedtime (10pm), she won't pee or poop. We feed her twice daily, 6am and 6pm. She poops 4-5 times daily! She is eating Hills Science Diet Puppy - and loves her food. We are not overfeeding her - we consulted with the vet. She pooped twice in her small crate last night (she's crated 10pm-4:30a.m.) and has peed in it on numerous occasions. We have blocked half of the crate off so she only has room to turn around and stand up. It's a crap shoot (literally!) as to when and where she will go. We put her in her playpen after eating, but she won't poop sometimes for HOURS. There is just no schedule, regardless of her feeding schedule. Is she just untrainable? HELP!! :( |
No dog is untrainable. Considering she should have stayed with her mom until 12 weeks think of her just being able to really start the potty training at 12 weeks. She is extremely young most pups aren’t full trained until 7 or 8 months. It takes time and patience. You can’t over feed a puppy really infact most people free feed. That sounds like a lot of poop though maybe you should try another food like Royal Canin or Wellness and see if it decrees. With mine they were outside potty trained and I would take them out every hour, after they woke up from a nap and after drinking water. |
Be patient -- it took about 1-year for our dog to be potty trained. |
Potty training hard heads... Welcome to the world of Yorkies! LOL They can be a terror or should that be Terrier to train. Just stick with it. As they mature and grow a little smarter they will get easier to work with. |

Same here but mostly my fault as I was not as consistent as I should of been. Had I been a little more diligent, it probably would of only taken 6 months |
me too I've never had a yorkie that was totally housebroke. I take them outside and it's a turd for the yard, come inside a turd for the pad and a turd for the floor. they get jealous of each other and peed on my furniture. I now make them wear diapers inside because I've given up on ever getting them house broke. |
