A question about my Yorkie's behavior... Hello folks!, My boy Max is a loving and faithful dog who follows my wife and I where ever we go. He sits on our laps and sleeps with us in our bed. However when my older brother comes over and stays, he completely switches his allegiance and he never leaves his side day or night, my wife calls him a little traitor! Why do you think he does this? My Brother had a stroke a few years ago could it be that Max senses he's vulnerable and is protecting him? |

That's a very big possibility. |
This has happened with Penny when my aunt come to stay for a week. Sometimes they just really like certain people. |
But they still love you! |
Dogs are happy, social creatures who believe wholeheartedly in the concept of "the more the merrier" in a stable family 'pack' and will ALWAYS greet and spend time with acceptable newcomers to encourage stability of their pack. The calm, well-behaved dog usually sees equanimous visitors as prospective pack members and treat them accordingly. Dogs inherently understand that pack enlargement reinforces the pack's ability to successfully survive - hunt, provide caregiving and increased safety for its members and as long as the prospective newbie isn't hostile or overly aggressive, ill or nervous, pack members usually try to curry favor with the newbie to ensure his likelihood to stay around and join up. I've never seen one of my dogs or fosters behave any other way than how you describe your Max' behavior with my sanguine guests. I have seen them shun or shy away from very nervous, unhappy or ill visitors, in whom they usually sense what they judge to be a weakness. Of course, over time, as long as I accept the 'weak' visitor, my dog(s) come to accept him albeit with a bit of a wary eye. |
When we had our first grand baby we had three dogs. None of them had ever been around a baby, and two of them kept a wide berth. Our mini schnauzer, however, did not leave his side whenever he was at the house. One of our favorite family pictures is of Lucky sleeping underneath the baby's crib. Those two were friends from the minute they met! He was friendly with my other grand babies as they arrived, but was truly bonded to the oldest until he passed...my grandson talks about "his Lucky" to this day. All of my dogs, over the years, have had "favorite people". When certain friends come to visit, they will immediately cuddle up in their laps. |
