Second Yorkie ok? Hi! My husband and I have a senior yorkie, female, and I'd love to get a male yorkie puppy but we're debating on if our female would be ok with it or if that's a recipe for disaster and we should wait until she passes? Anyone out there gotten a puppy with a senior at home?! How'd it work out? |
I have gotten a new little one, in the past, when I had a senior citizen at home. It generally takes a little longer for them to bond...and when the older dog had lost a companion animal the new relationship was not as close as the original partnership. The upside is that the older dog did, when he wanted to, engage and play, and seemed to act "younger". The really touching part is that when one of our seniors suddenly no longer enjoyed rides in the car, the new little one would climb in his bed and cuddle with him during trips. It comforted him, and calmed him right down...and this was an elderly dog that was not particularly affectionate/welcoming to the new little one. In his final months the baby was often found snuggling with him, and he would curl up alongside and sleep. Although the older dog will need some extra love, and "space" when the puppy is being a rambunctious puppy, I think that they will form a relationship that will benefit your senior. When we added our 2nd they were both still young so I don't know if being a senior will make a difference. But I do know that, in our case, adding a 2nd was the BEST thing we could have done. They love each other and keep each other happy when we are not there. Good luck with whatever you decide. |

Callie was 9 when I brought Joey home, then 11 when I brought Ollie home. She was used to being the only dog so it took her awhile. The biggest thing is playing Callie couldn’t keep up with the puppies so I felt bad for both of them. |

Just speaking from my own experience... When we had a senior Maltese girl, we opted to spend all our time with her alone. Not that it ever crossed our minds, but if we were to introduce a new dog to her, I'm sure it would have made her uneasy and unhappy - the puppy energy, the feeling like she's might be neglected etc. She was used to being the one and only one, and we would definitely wanted to keep her happy that way until she passed. Senior dogs can also be a lot of work...depending on their conditions. I have two Yorkies right now. They're 1.5 years apart. Even with a small age gap, it took quite some time for my older boy to accept her new sister. lol |
