New 5 month old male joining 3 year old female Hi everyone! Need some advice. We have a 3 year old female, Roxie. We felt she needed a companion, so we got a 5 month old male from our same breeder. Our female Roxie is still not accepting our male puppy yet. She will play a little, but not very much. Both dogs sleep in our bed and Roxie has a fit if little Tucker gets anywhere close to her. Both of them sleep next to me, not my husband. Does anyone have tips to get Roxie to chill? They could be having so much fun, if Roxie would relax. Tucker's personality is very laid back, which helps, and normally Roxie is too except when he wants to lay by her or initiates play. |
I had a pack of 3 females, all now have passed. They were all 3 years apart. In my experience it took a couple of months for my older ones to fully accept the wild child puppy. To stay on the floor and play with her. Roxie needs more time to fully adjust. Always make Roxie #1 in getting fed first, meaning put her food bowl down first, make Roxie the first to get pet when you are gone and come home, first to get a treat. Make sure Roxie has a safe haven, a place to get away from the puppy. Roxie is to know she has not been replaced. You will see, they will be BFF, Roxie just needs more time. |
It just takes time sometimes. Remember to treat and feed/give their food first to Roxie. You also need to make sure you have alone time with just Roxie. |
Thank you so much for your advice! |
Thank you. It is hard right now because Tucker eats 4 times a day yet. |
It took a couple of months for my older dog to accept my new pup. My older dog (Stella) is a standard poodle, she was 5.5 when Cosmo (my yorkie) came along at 7 months old. She wasn't mean to him at all, just couldn't care less that he existed. They played SO much last summer, racing around the yard chasing each other... Adorable!! Give them time... And maybe don't leave them alone together for a bit either if they aren't crated. Since mine are so different in size, I waited around 6 months before I started testing them alone together for short periods. |
