I am new to this site. Hello my name is Gail and my little Yorkie's name is Sullivan, "Sulley" . I would love to talk to anyone about this little guy who is now about 7 months. I have had dogs all my life, but never one this little. He has been a joy, and we are thinking about getting him a playmate by getting another Yorkie. But what I really want to ask is: What do any of you know about Luxating Pattela? About two months ago, Sulley was limping on his left back leg. Took him to the Vet, she did no xray but did say this is what he had. She wanted me to have a consult with a Vet Ortho Surgeon. But when I talked to my Breeder, she said no way. She said just keep him from being too busy on it, and keep an eye out first. He only did it a little and he would run like the wind and play never seeming to be in any pain at all. Eats and plays just fine. Sure enough, he has never done it on that leg again. But now he has started favoring the right hind leg. And now I worry he has this on that leg. Yet, again. He never acts in pain at all. He runs and jumps with ease. Can anyone tell me or explain. Thank you. |
Welcome to YT Gail and Sulley. I would get this pup to a Ortho Surgeon, not listen to your breeder but listen to your vet. Always best to be safe then sorry. Getting him a playmate at this point of time is not a good idea, puppies will zoom through the house, wild wrestling matches, leaping off furniture in wild crazy playing, speaking from experience in once having a pack of 3 yorkies. Have your lil Sulley checked for Luxating Pattela before getting him a BFF. |

Welcome to the world of luxating patella.. I did much research on this but my boy was 3-4yrs old then and we did a physio and at home exercise routine. We were very pleased with the results, but takes a huge time commitment on your time. Not so much cheaper than surgery but can be done. Do your research. |
Joey showed signs of it has a puppy and then grew out of. You still might want to get an orthopedic doctors opinion. Just because the breeder says it’s not luxating patella doesn’t mean she is right. |

Thank you for your reply. My breeder didn't say not to listen to the Vet, she just told me to wait and watch and keep him calmer with it for a little while. When this first happened, it was his left rear leg. That is when the Vet told me about maybe surgery. So, I talked to the breeder, she said, wait a little while before making that decision. And sure enough, it stopped. he no longer limps on that leg. But now it is the right rear leg. But it troubles me that this is indeed happening, and my first time with Yorkie's. And know this is common with them. So wanted to hear from those with Yorkies to see how many others have gone through this. I will wait and watch, and see if maybe this too, will stop. He never seems in pain and runs and plays like the wind. But thank you so much for responding. Glad your little one got better with it. |
I'm going to have to disagree about not getting another yorkie because the first one has LP. Callie had bad LP and I actually got Joey when she was on crate rest from ACL surgery. Yes Callie had her LP fixed through surgery but she still has arthritis and everything else and I still added to my gang. Joey had mild not ever gradable LP issues when he was a puppy that he seemed to out grow but I still rescued Penny. LP isn't a death or end of life sentence many dogs live great lives with it. |
