The Joys of having a Male pup So I'm in need of a psychological support guys  Last night my furbaby humped his blanket and when I said no and went to take it away he had a full on and I mean FULL ON erection. Nevermind I'm a first time dog owner, the thing was HUGE in proportion to his body. He laid down next to me, napped for a minute or two, tbh he looked a bit confused. In less than 5 minutes it went back. Last week vet told us his testicles are not even descending yet! :idontknow I'm not ignorant and understand that he is a live creature and a male and this is normal etc I just didn't expect it to be so early (he's 15 weeks old). I hope its only happening due to lack of new exercises and experiences and as we are OK'ed to go out for walks in a few days it will not happen again. BF was opposed to neutering him (men take it almost personally I swear ) but at our last vet appt she also recommended to neuter him if we don't want puppies and said we can do it somewhere between 6 and 12 months old. He is now well over 4 lbs - whats your experience? When is a good time for the procedure? Don't want to hurt the puppy but I'm afraid what this humpy-dumpy will be capable of if this is happening so early. |
I have always had female dogs, Cody is a rescue, a surrender, he was 2.5 yo when we hooked up. I have all his medical records, he was neutered when he was a year old. If your pups testicles haven't descended yet I assume you'll have to wait until they do. I believe a male can still be neutered but it will become a surgery procedure instead of just a neuter procedure. From what I have read testicles have usually dropped by 5 months old so you have time yet. The sooner you get him neutered the better. If he is humping, hiking his leg to pee, the longer you wait the more this becomes a habit reason why getting him neutered as soon as it is medically safe is best. I believe my kid was neutered at a year old was due to finical issues as that was the reason he was surrendered. Please tell your BF neutering is done to prevent testicular cancer, it also helps in indoor marking and leg hiking, most dogs will squat when the pee if neutered at an early age. My boy squats when he pees, sooooo cute lol and has never hiked his leg to mark in the house. If he was humping it was more likely due to him being excited over something, maybe a toy, if it was, remove the item that excited him. |
Thank you so much for taking your time with such a detailed answer! I have also read a lot about the health benefits of neutering so it's not even a question. Just want to know when is best to do it. A few days ago I saw Mike already trying to lift his leg a little just for like a nano-second before the usual squating)) so nature does really takes it's course... |
Female dogs hump too. It’s not necessarily a sexual thing but a dominance thing. The problem with humping toys and blankets is it can dry out the Penis and make it get stuck which then for most people means a trip to the vet ASAP or Vaseline. The red thing is actually his penis and what you normally see is just the penis covering. I would neuter at 5 or 6 months old if you wait to long he will start to mark. Just make sure you get pre surgery blood work. More then likely his testicles will not drop they still could but it’s doubtful. |
Since you're not going to use him for breeding, neuter your boy right away. A veterinarian once told me it's more unnatural for a healthy, intact dog not to breed, than to have him/her neutered/spayed. |

I opted for a female because I didn't want to deal with marking etc. And now that I read this I'm doubly glad lol. |
Out of all the females I have had only one yorkie was a humper lol. The only time Cody ever humped anything was a big teddy bear that Santa gave him 2 years ago. When he got it Christmas day he grabbed it and proceeded to kill it, it landed between his legs and the humping started, in a harsh tone I told him no humping, and took the bear away. A few days later I took it out, sat it on the floor, Cody walked past it, gave it a dirty look but kept away from it, it got him in trouble, I never have to speak to him in a harsh tone, every so often he'll grab it and fling it around, if he ends up straddling it he'll leap off it, give it a dirty look and won't go near it again lol. |
