New Yorkie mum here from UK Hi, I’ve just adopted a 6 year old miniature Yorkie boy, I came on here to find out information on the breed as he’s my first Yorkie, I have 2 other dogs different breeds who I rescued from Spain, they all get on great. I’ve had him 7 weeks now, and last week he decided to fall in love with my big dog and follows him everywhere, even to the extent of putting his 2 front paws on him when we are out walking and clinging to him. He cuddles in to him constantly, my big dog is getting fed up with this now as he can’t get space from him. We are seeing a behaviourist next week at the vets to see what I can do to stop this. Has anyone experienced this on here, I’d really appreciate any feed back. He hasn’t been neutered and the vet doesn’t want to either as he doesn’t think that’s the problem and also it could change his temperament with him being an older dog. |

Hi and welcome :)! Congrats on your new yorkie, he sounds like a sweetheart! On one hand, it's so very sweet that he adores your big dog - but if it tends to annoy the bigger guy after a while, I can see where that could be a problem. Does he like any certain toys or anything like that? Distracting him may help - ie, whenever he's hovering around the big dog, redirect him to something else. Do you think he's scared...as in, does he shake or get nervous if the big dog isn't near him? If so, you could try a Thundershirt or a DAP Collar. I'm sure the behaviorist will have some great ideas, so please let us know what they say! |

Welcome! Bravo to your rescue nature and outreach to a behavioralist. I have not had quite the same experience as you, but have my own behavior issue with my little gal-puppy who attends playtime and classes with other puppies. Each of the trainer/supervisors have remarked that she has excellent play attitude and confidence, but that collapses 25% of the time when another dog's play goes too far. Little Dutch doesn't consistently push back quickly enough against the unwanted behavior. Hope this helps.--KatysMom |
