Barking at night Please help, We have had our rescue Yorkie for a year. He’s 8 and we knew he had behavioural problems but they have got worse. He was always restless at night but a noise outside frightened him in the middle of the night and he started barking uncontrollably. My husband tried to calm him and he bit him. Now he barks every night, I have tried leaving the light on, playing music but nothing calms him. He stops if I take him down to the conservatory but when I leave him alone he starts barking again. To try and get some sleep I stayed with him and slept on the sofa. I have been doing this for a couple of nights so my husband can get sleep as he has to get up early for work. I know if I leave my Yorkie alone in the conservatory he will bark again, even though he spends most of the day there. I am worried about the neighbours complaining. I am getting very stressed because he won’t settle upstairs and I can’t keep sleeping on the sofa. Please help! |
Do you have him in the bedroom with you at night where he can see you? It sounds like he maybe having anxiety maybe you should talk to the vet about anxiety medicine. |

Night barking I hear you!! I have a barky dog who is worse at night. He is the best watch dog and seems more sensitive to noises and perhaps people or wildlife outside at night. He hears or smells things we do not and sometimes I will take him out the front door when he will run to the front gate to check things out and then come back and be quiet. Also I wonder if he dreams and gets scared? I do find that if he is on my bed he is quieter, so I think he likes to know where I am at all times to protect me. If he is in the bedroom at night when I watch tv, he hates some noises and I have to be quick on the mute button! I certainly would persist with having him in the bedroom with you, it will help his anxiety. I know if my neighbor next door has her son’s dog with her, my dog will bark if the other dog barks or is let out to potty. Our dog was rescued too and we never know what fears they come to us with. Mine sure hates noise, and fireworks are really stressful for him. So good luck and hope he improves with time. |

For my return flight, I bought some calming/anxiety treats from a pet store. It worked like a charm! He was super calm the entire flight back and didn't cry once. He was awake though. He popped his head up to look at me every now and then. But he didn't look scared. Not sure if you have something like this in Ireland, but the product is called "Calming" by Head to Tail. Calming | Head to Tail Pet Supplements I got the package for small breeds. |
I don't mean to be obtuse, but is the conservatory? I agree with others that keeping him close is probably better for his anxiety, but am sorry that I cannot offer substantial advice. Piper is sort of a rescue and she certainly has her idiosyncrasies, like barking at everyone who comes in house and she just won't stop. I can't just leave her to work it out with visitor as she's prone to snap/bite. It's a huge dilemma for me, so in that regard, I deeply sympathize with your situation. |

Our vet prescribed 1/8 of a tablet of trazadone for my guy if thunderstorms are predicted. I can give him one whenever I believe he will really stress. It has made the world of difference. Good luck. Gew |
