Piper Has Me Puzzled Piper was very lethargic this morning; she stayed in bed after I got up, and when she came out, would walk a few feet, then lie down. She responded positively, but very subdued, when asked about going for a walk...and she did perk up during walk--even chased after rabbits (on her 30' leash). When we got home, she laid down pretty much immediately and is sleeping now. It's just got me concerned...Her little body functions are normal; she's had water and has happily eaten chicken. My question (finally, right?) is could Piper be affected the high humidity and heat here in southeastern Wisconsin? They have issued 'extreme heat warnings' which is something we never experienced in Sparks, NV. Our home has AC, but it was off most of last night; I turned it on early morning cuz I was having trouble sleeping. Anyway, is there something I should be doing for my girl or should I leave her alone and just let her sleep (under couch--a new is discovery and new favorite)? Any changes any Piper cause me concern (read: nervous, worried, and scared), but I'm trying to maintain common sense. Any thoughts, suggestions, or steps I should take at this time? THANK YOU SOOO MUCH FOR ANY DIRECTION... |
Yes it can effect them. I have found mine like to rest a lot when it’s very hot and when it’s raining. We have had pretty bad heat since Sunday and mine are all taking it pretty chill and sleeping a lot even the puppy. It seems to effect my girls worse then the boys but my girls have much thicker hair. Just make sure she has fresh cold water and that she doesn’t get overheated and she should be fine. |
Bless your heart for offering much-needed reassurance, you little doll! Piper, too, has a longish, thicker coat (we just gotsta finda groomer). I think Maryland and southeastern Wisconsin must have very similar summer weather conditions! Thank you, again, for your educated opinion and for responding so quickly...I may just take a little nap now myself! |

When Duchess gets sluggish it's usually because of the heat. When it is cool outside, Duchess is like the energizer bunny, should can walk for miles but when it is hot, she slows down very quickly and her excitement about being outside goes away very quickly and of course she doesn't want to walk.....I always keep water on me for those extremely hot days when we go for walks. If there are no other symptoms, it's probably just the heat. |
It turns out it wasn't the heat. Later that afternoon, Piper was lying on her back on a gel mat and when tried to get up, she cried out. And Piper NEVER CRIES--EVER! Needless to say, an hour later I was at the nearest emergency vet. Turns out Piper had strained back muscles from a fall she'd taken the day before...Normally I slow her down slowly when she's chasing a rabbit (30') leash, but I screwed up and when she reached the end of leash, she flipped on her back. Because she was up and running without missing a beat, I wasn't overly concerned until emergency vet said the reason Piper was hunched over (looking to me like she was gonna be sick) was because her back muscles were so tight. I instantly saw mental replay of that backflip and told vet. So after thorough exam and x-rays, I brought Piper home with painkillers and had my bright-eyed girl back the next morning. Yet another lesson learned that poor little Pipe had to take brunt of...Leashes and rabbits will always be carefully monitored without fail. I know Piper counts on me to keep her safe and I let her down--some of the worst pain we can feel, yes? This morning Piper was very ginger about chasing a rabbit; I'm going to do everything I can to convince her it's ok--and she can count on me to make sure it is... Thank you guys so very much for responding to my post as you all always make me feel better...just love my YT best friends. |

Poor Piper, thank goodness she din't get seriously injured in that back flip. Happy to hear she is on the mend. |
Ohmygosh, me too--so glad it wasn't worse...She's taking it easy on her own with the rabbits, which tells me she hurt! (my poor, poor little baby girl). But gratefully, Pipe is up and moving and back to being a meatball. Big brown eyes bright and sparkly--and that is everything!! Thanks for caring about us--as we do you |
