Scared of oxygen tank
 

Does anyone else have pup terrified of the noise and oxygen tank makes when you let some of the air out of it or "crack" it. My grandmother is on the small tanks of oxygen and if she so much as unzips the bag to check her level Callie will take off out the doggy door and not come back in no matter what for at least 15 minutes. If she see's a new one being brought out onto the table she's gone. I try to get them to tell me when they are going to do it before they get a new one out so I can shut the doggy door and take her to my room. Now Joey who wasn't scared of it saw his sister be scared of it so he shakes now. Callie is about to be 11 so I don't know if there is anything I can do about it with her and I'm not sure what I can do with Joey. Penny honestly couldn't care less. Anyone else have this problem? What did you do about it?

Interesting and now that you mention it I remember when Cali was in Service Dog school they exposed the dogs to that sound and they did it over and doves because many were not fond of it. It didn’t affect Cali much but some dogs really had some trouble with it. They did record it and use it over and over at various degrees of loudness to those who were not too fond of it. They used immersion techniques a lot at the school. Maybe that would help.

Jackson would likely be that way too. He's veryyy weird about certain sounds.

He hides and shakes when my stepdad pops/cracks his gum in his mouth (he is really loud, in Jackson's defense).

He HATES the beep from the smoke alarm if it's batteries are low. He also hates the smoke alarm in general. Our oven gets really smoky no matter what we make so whenever he hears the oven door open, he will go and hide, just assuming the smoke alarm will go off.

There's a commercial on TV where the alarm goes off and it's like a shrill loud pitched beep (I guess similar to smoke alarm beep) and he will get off the bed and hide under it if it comes on.

It's a very specific pitch that he doesn't like. Lower pitched beeps he doesn't care about. And go figure, he can be sitting right next to a leaf blower, the air pump that blows up rafts, vacuum cleaners, motorcycles, four wheelers, ambulances and not even bat an eye! But god forbid he hears a little beep.

I haven't been able to train him to accept them because once he's in the frightened state of mind, he usually doesn't want to take food anyway. So I just let him take cover and hide for a few minutes until he realizes it's over.

Funny you mentioned the smoke alarm mine keeps malfunctioning and it went off last night and she was out of my bedroom (doggy door on it) and in the farthest part of the house that she could be to get away from the sound. I'm not sure if she would take any treats or not I could try it when they are doing the oxygen tank and see if it works and make sure to shut the doggy door. Joey wasn't scared of it but I think he thinks he is supposed to be because she is. Maybe I will try also sitting on the floor too. At 11 she is probably set in her ways but maybe I can convince Joey it's not big deal we will see.

I think I might also try sitting on the floor with treats next time and see if that helps. If I don't know they are doing it, it startles me to so I don't really blame her lol

Make sure they get exposed to seeing and sniffing the tank too. That might help. Mario was scared of a lot of things when we got him, but through patience and slow but steady exposure we have overcome almost all of them.

I usually just set the item in the floor for him to inspect at his leisure for a while, then slowly I will go sit next to it and pet him, then pick it up and pet him, etc.....

We are working on him not being startled by the start gun at special olympics again......why they use a real and loud start gun is beyond me. A paper or pop cap gun would be easier on all involved.
