Summer with long hair yorkie We have grown out Max’s hair and this is his 2nd summer. Last summer his hair was way shorter and thinner. Now he has a luscious long flowing coat...but in the summer what do you do? Does the groomer thin his hair so it’s not so thick? Last year she shaved his belly but that’s not going to work now. Don’t want to keep him indoors all summer but is there a summer cut that preserves that 2 years of growing it out? |
Emma is in long coat. We don't do anything specific in t he summer but she's comfortable walking with no issues. She plays, she goes for walks, etc. no limits. The groomer doesn't do any thinning or anything like that, just a normal groom. I do shave her belly, under arms and sanitary area in general anyway as to prevent mats. |
My now passed girls were kept in full coat year round, one inch off the ground. Our weekends were spent camping, they swam, tussled in the grass, little tom boys all 3 of them, but they had fun. They were brushed every night before bedtime. Long coat didn't interfere with their activity level. |
I keep Gidget in a puppy cut year round. She hates to be "messed with" so it's easier for me and less of a problem. She goes to the groomer about every 2 or 3 months as needed. I love the long coats on Yorkies but it's just not for us. |

Hi Cats307, I usually kept Katy's coat long-ish, but she did sport shorter cuts a few times. When we learned that she would not be with us too much longer, her groomer (mobile) took the news pretty hard. That morning, they were together in the van for a *very* long time. When they came back in, Katy was wearing a puppy cut, and the groomer had tears in his eyes. I was disappointed but said nothing. It took six or seven months, but Katy's coat grew back. Whether they are wearing puppy cuts, short cuts or long hair, these little ones are just precious. |

Here I've been only trimming the belly and sanitary area.. |
Just got back from the groomers with had Gidget cut into her summer hairdo. She looks so cute and so little. Don't see how she could get anymore adorable but maybe I'm just a little prejudice! You think? |

Max loves to sit outside and will almost all day. That’s why I thought the long coat might be too hot but I love the look. His new sister appears to have that cottony coat that has to stay short..so Max has to be my long flowy gorgeous yorkie. |
I've tried letting my girl have longer hair before and she developed skin issues (we are in the south, so there's tons of allergens and whatnot's). I always keep her hair in either a puppy cut (no longer than an inch or so during winter/cooler seasons) or mostly buzzed down, where her hair would look like a "short haired smooth coat". She's a bit overweight so she gets hot easier, and she is a no fuss kind of dog. she loves to be pampered but does not care to look pampered :p |
We keep our wee Pepsi in his puppy coat from Spring to Autumn (Fall) and then let it grow in for the winter months. He looks so cute in his puppy outfit and so messy in his winter coat but he seems to enjoy both equally. We do it for us more than him, as it is easier to keep him clean and tidy when he's roaming about in fields and long grass. |
None of mine have personality’s for long hair. Callie has such thick hair you can tell when it’s close to time for her to get groomed because she starts panting more. |
