Anyone know??? This might be a stupid question...But Brett has had a staph infection for the past 3 weeks.. and i was wondering if dogs can get staph... i know their bodies are different from ours..but i just want to make sure they can't.. |
I sure don't know the answer to that but a friend of mine just went thru an awful time with her yorkies foot - it looked like RAW Hamburger from what they thought was an infection ...after many trips to the vet....turned out to be microscopic mites - Where is this staph infection on your yorkie ? Is he he on Antibiotics ? Poor baby...3 weeks is a long time |
I think Brett is her hubby! Ask your vet, Kelly, but I am not sure there are a whole lot of things that pass from humans to dogs. |
I copied this from a google search. Staph Infection Question My dog has a staph infection. How did she get it and can I catch it from her? Answer Unfortunately, staph infections of the skin are very common in dogs. It is the most common bacteria present on the skin of dogs. Often the bacteria are present without any clinical signs, such as lesions. Usually, there is something that triggers the infection so that the bacteria settles into the pores. Fertilizer, grass seed, pollens or other allergens can act as the trigger, leading to a staph infection. Allergy symptoms may include itchy ears, feet and abdomens. When the skin is inflamed due to allergies, it is more likely to get infected by bacteria such as staph. Your veterinarian will prescribe an antibiotic to treat the infection and will try to determine the primary cause of the infection, such as an allergy, so that they can treat the allergy, thereby decreasing the risk of infection in the future. Because the staph infection is usually secondary to the allergy, it is not contagious to people. |

HHMMM.. I think that she is asking if her dog could catch the infection from a human being.. I know that staf can be contagious. But the dog would have to have a wound or a cratch for the staf to enter. I think as long as you take the same precautions with the dog, that you do with people, you shouldn't have a problem. I hope that this was of some help! :) |
Well slap me to wake up and pass the coffee. I read this backwards totally. I DO NOT know if our fur kids can catch staph from us humans. |

It's a great question and I'm curious to find out. I would like to guess and say that our fur kids cannot catch staph from us but definitely do not know the answer. |
HAHA Yes! Brett = HUMAN!! Thanks for all the responses...I know i've been freaking out b/c i don't want it..but i would DIE if one of the babies got it!! |
Yes unfortunatly I am the one with the Staph infection.....I have had it since December 22 and been treated since December 23. The first perscription they gave me (Keflex) didn't work. infact the staph got worse. Then on Jan 1 I was perscribed my second antibotic (Bactrium). After 10 days it took care of it.....in fact I thought it was gone... Then on the 19th a bump appeared. I went back to the doctor for another round of Bactrum. she gave me the perscription but also took a culture of the infection and sent it off to get tested. She is worried that the antibotics I have taken won't work on it. I won't get the results until Wednesday. I have been released from work until I am better. I have taken as much precautions as I can when around Kelly and the babies. All I can say is I hope none of you (humans or yorkies) ever experience this. It is honestly the most pain I have ever experienced. |
We can very rarely catch anything from our dogs - or they from us. There is what is called a "species barrier" meaning most things cannot travel from one species to another. A good example is that our dogs cannot catch a cold or the flu from us. Carol Jean |
