squirrels My female yorkie wants to chase squirrels everytime i take her out to potty.. is there a way to train them to stop that? i hate jerking on her leash to keep her away.. she isn't scared of anything. will obedient class help this? |
Oh those pesky squirrels, as you know the yorkie was breed to hunt and kill small rodents, the prey drive is still in them. Any yorkie I have owned always went nuts over squirrels and chipmunks, once they are focused on these lil critters they don't respond to us. If you have trained the leave it command and she knows it well you can try that, or on walks if she spots one and starts that pulling, turn and walk the opposite way, away from the squirrel. My boy responds to leave it, I can calm him a bit by constantly repeating leave it. Lets see what methods others members use. |
Considering they are terriers I doubt it but you could always try leave it which they will teach you in obedience classes. We don’t really have squirrels but boy do mine love to chase the birds. |
Gidget goes crazy when she sees a squirrel. I have to make sure I have a very firm grip on her leash. No such thing as "loose leash" walking with her. Otherwise, she'd be gone after that little creature. |
Because Piper can chase squirrels at will from her little yard (squirrels are on the other side of fence), she doesn't have as much interest in the ones we see on our walks. But, as Pipe is a true representative of her breed, as Matese said, once they're focused (gophers el biggie love and obsession cuz they're under her deck), we kinda cease to exist for a bit!! Ya gotta love that laser focus and determination!! And don't you find that these little Yorkies have amazing strength?! |
