2 1/2 yr old Hi. My yorkie has been house trained since he was a couple of months old but has recently started pooping and peeing in the house. He is only doing it in the mornings sometime between when I go to bed and when I get up. Is this something that happens with yorkie or at this age? What’s the best way to handle it? Thank you! |
What time is his last meal of the day and does he poop after that meal. Before you go to bed do you take him out for his last pee before you go to bed. |
2 1/2 yr old Joan, he has mvd(microvascular dysplasia), so he is a free feeder and does sometimes eat in the evening. He has always gone for his last walk about 6 or 7pm. It has never been a problem before but maybe i should start taking a last walk before we go to bed? |
I would definitely take him out just before you go to bed. My boy goes out about 8PM, I go to bed 10 or 11PM, I always take him out just before I go to bed and tell him what to do, pee-pee or poo-poo. It's usually just a pee pee. Hope it works out for you. |
Make sure you take him potty before bed and limit the space he has at night. Maybe even use a crate at night. |

I really don’t understand his condition, but I wonder if you could remove his food a few hours before taking him out before you go to bed. I would not limit water. Crating him and limiting his area are great ideas that I would try, but I would limit food if it would not hurt him too because having to poo and hold it all night might be very uncomfortable |

I highly suggest taking him out before bed, especially if he has this overnight pooping issue. Have you noticed a change in the times he eats? Or any changes to activities (i.e. is he more active at night after his last walk)? Sometimes a lot of activity / playtime can trigger potty. Or if he's eating later in the day, maybe that's why his poop times have changes. Under normal circumstances, the easiest way to know their poop times is by controlling their feeding schedule. But in your case, it's kind of hard to say.. and it's difficult to correct because he needs to be free-fed due to diagnoses. |
