Guess i’ll Have to start tripling their meals. HaHa. The irony is that the orthopedist said to keep them light to make it easier on their knees. |

Gosh. I appreciate all your good ideas. I feel so badly because the two love to run free, but obviously that can’t be now. They are really not too thin at seven pounds, but would be obese at 12. I did order the 64 inch golf umbrella. I cringe ever time I take them out. |
I didn't want to post a link to this man's Facebook page, but a friend of mind reposted his post from April 14. This man lives in Kansas, and they believe it was a hawk or owl that swooped down and grabbed their baby (full size long-haired Dacshund). The poor baby has talon puncture wounds on his back and near his front legs. We are loaded with owls and hawks here in Mississippi (too much open land here), as well as various land critters that are bigger than our boys. We let them use piddle pads, and if they go outside, we watch them (no pun intended) like a hawk. |
Aw, it's always such a piercing pain to read about furbabies who have been injured by birds this way. I can't imagine... just can't. I would hate myself forever. It'd be way too traumatic. Always better on a leash and watched like a hawk, than dead. |
Actually humans aren't that much of a deterrent. We have hawks and vultures and the occasional eagle. I never ever let Zeke out alone. Not even on the deck. A few days ago while walking Zeke a hawk started circling us and was getting fairly close so I picked up Zeke and the hawk came even closer so I started waving my free arm in the air and finally he backed away. Hawks are not to be played with. I always have Zeke on a leash and whenever I see them circling I keep Zeke very close. |

True. Their time to hunt is around 5-7 pm and I now walk with a big walking stick. We haven't had one come close since that day. We have a heavily traveled path right next to my house and this last week there have been hundreds up and now. Wild flowers. I think maybe all the extra traffic may have caused the birds to move upstream. They will be back when it warms up again. Part of living in a beautiful place is co-existing with Nature. |

We are in NH. Due to ongoing construction, the density of birds, deer, etc. increases each year. There are ***three*** hawk nests in the trees around our property. Before getting Fabian, we have seen them land/joust in our unfenced backyard. We are going to get chimes or something else shiny and moving as another poster suggested. We are extremely aware of our surroundings when we take him outside (ALWAYS on a leash) and we go in immediately whenever we see a sufficiently-large bird and cawing. I'm tempted to call Fish & Game, but don't want to end up on an episode of North Woods Law. <g> |
Not sure about other areas, but the red tailed hawk is an endangered species here. I got the 64inch umbrella and actually got to use it today. Two hawks appeared overhead and I pulled my two on their six foot leads as close to the house as possible as we made our way to the French doors with the umbrella spinning overhead. The hawks didn’t dive but I just went outside again, and now three are flying in circles overhead. Guess i’ll Just carry them outside one at a time under the umbrella, set one down to tend and bring back in. Of course, I will only bring each out when absolute necessary. This is crazy! Scary and crazy! |
I sometimes have vultures circling. It's hard to tell the difference for me. Red Tail Hawks. That's actually pretty cool. Not for the babies tho. On our walk yesterday I saw a garden with a fence around it and fencing over the top also. Perhaps you could build a similiar structure for the babies. |
