New and happy Yorkie owner Since Sept. I own a 7 yrs. old Yorkie, I got her for from a "breeder" in Mobile, Alabama. We live in Florida. She did not have a name, was not housebroken (I still cannot trust her when I travel with her), afraid to walk on grass, tapeworms, not vaccinated, no microchip, bad teeth and she was badly groomed. I guess they cut most of the matted hair out in the last moment. Now she lives the good life, sits on a sofa, sleeps in my bed, eats organic food and fruits, has beautiful dog beds and toys and she gets all my attention. For 45 yrs I owned poodles (breeder, groomer, handler) Miniature and Standard poodles and was participating on Dog Shows but all my dogs were well taken care of!!! Owning a Yorkie is challenge for me, I still have to improve my Yorkie grooming and figure out and learn the different grooming styles and what tools are best to use and I am interested in the Standard for Yorkshire Terriers. Any suggestions are welcome. I also want to ask the members of this group for advice what kind of collar or harness is the best for a 7 pound Yorkie. Thank you for any recommendations. |
Welcome:) Hi, I just wanted to welcome you to Yorkie Talk. Poodles sure are different than Yorkies for sure. I always had them as pets. A harness would be the best for a Yorkshire over a collar. They can have collapsed tracheas and so a harness would not cause a strain on their throat. Best of luck with now owning a Yorkie and thank you for adopting and giving a better life to your new baby. |
Welcome to YT, I also had poodles until the yorkie breed captured my heart. Harness only for all small breeds. Collars press against their trachea and can / will cause collapsed trachea. Collar for tags only. This poor lil baby that you rescued, no reputable breeder would keep their dog in such horrible condition, sounds like a puppy mill breeder to me. Did you get her spayed, if not at 7 years old she is in high risk of getting mammary gland tumors and pyometra which both can be fatal, but I am sure you already know this. Thank you for treating her as the princess she was born to be. I cannot offer grooming advise, I keep my kid in a puppy cut 365 and done by the groomer but, he does sport a top knot. |
Welcome! I'm so glad you rescued this baby. I love Yellow Dog Design collars because they are not very thick and they are very soft. I get them at https://www.dogcollarsboutique.com/Y...p-1-c-185.html. For harnesses I absolutely love love love the buddybelt its just about impossible to get out of and free from hitting on the trachea like a lot of harnesses do. There is an awesome member here who sells them here is her store website W. Field's Dog Boutique: Designer Dog Clothes and Accessories. I would only use the collar for tags though not the leash. |
I also keep my Gidget in a puppy cut year round. I'm not interested in showing her and take her to the groomer as needed for the puppy cut. It's so easy to take care of and it works for both of us. She's a little diva so it's dresses and shirts for her during the day and night gowns at night. Not sure that would work if she had long hair. I also use only the harness for her -- the buddy belt is the easiest for me to take off and put on when we need to do outside. Thank you for rescuing this little yorkie and giving it a loving and caring home. |
Hello and welcome to YT :) |
Thank you all for your replies and answers. I will check out the websites and get her a really nice harness. Right now I have her hair longer but I think I will cut it short, its easier when I put a harness around her. She is spayed now and she gets regular check ups. I always loved Yorkshire Terriers and now that I am older its a perfect dog for me, easy to groom and I can take her with me wherever I go. She finally got the good life she deserves. I hope she will have a long life. |
Congratulations and glad she has you! |
Thanks, all my friends say the same. |
Aw this is so heart-felt. I am so happy you found each other. Congrats to you both!! I also hope she will live a long happy life with you. :) If you have any questions at all, this is the best place to be. There are so many members here with so much experience in all different areas. I keep my two in long hair right now and use the Buddy Belt harness. I love it! When they go out for their daily walks, I tie 2 to 3 pony tails on their backs so the hair doesn't drag on the ground. Haha.. here's a short little clip of Casie walkin in the rain. It's playing in reverse, just because I think it's so funny. :D https://www.instagram.com/p/BgSQhycB...ttie.and.casie |
Thank you for the message. The video is really cute, lol. |
I normally use a vest like this one. https://www.chewy.com/puppia-soft-ve...E&gclsrc=aw.ds Then apply any leash to it. |
